Some friends had booked us into this hotel. At first glance, the Atlanta shows a grim and foreboding countenance. Walk through the thick wooden door of the 20s-era facade to confront a long, dark staircase up to a landing, and then to still another flight of stairs to the "lobby" and other public rooms. There is only on-street parking wherever one can find space in the neighborhood. When I asked about keeping my iPad in the hotel safe, the desk clerk merely took the iPad and gave me a note that said he had taken it for safe keeping: no double-keyed lock box or other security measures. (On one morning I even had to WRITE the note for a desk person who was apparently unfamiliar with the concept.) And our two rooms were at the end of a long, dark corridor. Frankly, seeing all of this right up front left me with some apprehension about being at this hotel for three nights.
However, the place ended up being entirely satisfactory, and even charmingly evocative of an earlier, simpler hotel era. The large windows let ample light into the high-ceilinged rooms, which, though not lavish, were comfortable. The in-room bathrooms-with-shower were clean and perfectly functional. There was a also a hearty breakfast. And the location, just off Kurfurstendamm, was walking-distance handy to shops, S-bahn and U-bahn trains and even the Zoo.
As it turned out, all of us had a great time in Berlin, and certainly appreciated the good value that we got from the Atlanta.
