Owner description: The Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum fur Gegenwart – Berlin presides over a comprehensive collection of contemporary art, which it presents in a variety of exhibitions. It is the largest among the buildings housing the Nationalgalerie’s extensive holdings, the remainder of which are divided into the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Neue Nationalgalerie, the Museum Berggruen, and the Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg. The museum’s name refers to the building’s original function as one of the first terminal stations of the rail system in Germany. It opened as the terminus of the railway line between Hamburg and Berlin in December 1846. The building’s late Neoclassical style was conceived by the architect and railway pioneer Friedrich Neuhaus. It set an architectural precedent for the subsequent designs of Berlin’s train stations through the second half of the 19th century. Today it is preserved as the city’s only train station remaining from that time.

This is far more extensive than we first realised. We should have done a bit more homework before going round as we ended up missing some of the modern art that we wanted to see. The exhibitions change so it is important to research just prior to going. We enjoyed it and will go back to catch up. It has a very nice restaurant.

When we first paid we thought it was a bit expensive - until we started walking around. We really liked the fact that they kept the feeling of the original train station and enjoyed the exhibit there. We looked upstairs and were about to leave when we discovered two more galleries on the ground floor (don't miss the Beuys). But yes, it was hot and you may not carry your jacket - so check it! It's free.

Rude museum monitors act like little dictators making you feel like you were in prison. Air was hot and fusty. You sweat inside even thought outside weather is freezing. Art itself was fascinating and old building is great. Visit to experience good old time prison guards (monitors) trying to make you feel uncomfortable.
