“Construction, construction, construction!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2012

Never mentioned by email or when reserving the room, construction in hotel started at 9am!! Got a discount but left the next day. Room was small and badly laid out. Very, very overpriced!
Bathroom had glass doors, almost no privacy for guests visiting. Prepaid for a week thru Expedia. Left for the Hyatt, a great hotel with construction but they were at least honest that hotels plan their construction for empty August. Do not trust Expedia. Call the hotel straight away instead..

Room Tip: These rooms sound large, but are badly laid out. Rooms are cut in half by bad design!

We stayed five days in Berlin and had booked and pre-paid a management suite (50 m2) at the Mandala hotel. We were shown to our room, 623, around 6 pm, but were immidiately disappointed because the room didn't match the pictures we had seen on hotels.com or the Mandala website. So, my husband went down to the reception straight away because we thought there had been a mistake, and he politely asked a very simple question: "Is room 623 40m2 or 50m2 big?" The man in the receprion asked for his name, checked the computer and answered : "The room is 50m2, but it can be hard to tell because of the angles and the walk-in closet". My husband then explained we asked because of the pictures on the webpages, and the receptionist told him that the pictures could vary a lot form real life. (!)
We had had a long and exhausting trip, accepted the answer (of course) and went out to eat, but when we returned, something still didn't feel right even though the staff had assured us this was the room we had booked. We compared the room to other rooms at the same floor, tried to measure it, until we were absolutely certain that the room was only 40m2... By then it was quite late, we were agitated, but went down to the reception again, this time demanding to get the room we had paid for. This time they had to admit that yes, 623 was a 40m2 city studio, and promised us to fix it the next morning. We were then given a new room, and upgrade to an executive suite because of the "misunderstanding".
We have never experienced to be lied to by a hotel before, and if we had trusted the staff, we would have stayed in a room smaller and cheaper than the one we had paid for. It was a quite uncomfortable and stressful experience. The rest of the stay was ok, but we never felt we could trust any of the staff, for obvious reasons. So, if you plan to stay at the Mandala Hotel, which has the potential of being a really nice and central hotel, be sure you get what you pay for. Who knows if others have been told the same things, trusted the staff, and ended up staying in the wrong room without noticing.

My husband booked this through hotels.com for a reasonable rate and it was spectacular. The hotel is very modern in style and the rooms are huge. The bathrooms are also very large and well appointed. I liked the towel warmers. The metro is only a block and a half away and sights such as the Berlin wall and Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag are close enough to walk (if you are a regular walker). The curry wurst stands are great for lunch and someone at the hotel recommended the restaurant Maximillians to us for fun German fare and it was spot on. They also set up the Christmas market nearby in the middle of November. Try the hot wine!

This hotel was perfect for us. We stayed for 5 nights at the beginning of our European vacation. It is modern and the rooms are nicely appointed. We were on a high floor and could not hear any of the street traffic. We ate in their casual restaurant and really enjoyed our meals. The location worked out well for us to walk to different neighborhoods in the city. One of the hotel's staff suggested that we try the Mandala Suites next time because it is more central for shopping. Speaking of shopping a must see is Ka De We department store! Go with an empty stomach and a wallet full of Euros. We like it better than Harrods in London.

It is certainly not an idyllic neighbourhood, office towers and shopping malls around, but the location is ideal to reach any destination in the city, both west and east. Surprisingly, the hotel provides an environment sheltered from the hectic of the city, especially if you are in a studio/suite to the inner courtyard. There are even measures against electro-smog inside the building! The decoration of the rooms is, although exquisite, very plain and this adds to the atmosphere of tranquillity. The highly professional and kind staff is also part of the outstanding experience.

The hotel hosts an extraordinary restaurant, the Facil. It is the right place for wonderful culinary delights. If you don't find a table in Facil, the Qiu Lounge is NOT an alternative. Qiu is good for informal meeting with friends and drinks, but the food and service quality is well behind Facil. In one occasion in Qiu, we had to wait too long for our food, and when they arrived, one of the dishes were already cold. In another occasion, my schnitzel smelled like fish because it was probably fried in the same oil with fish. This is almost scandalous, in a house where an outstanding hotel and restaurant is situated. Therefore, if you don't find a table in Facil, then go to Essenza almost next door. Essenza has very good food and efficient service.

I booked the hotel on a deal with 'Secret Escapes' for about £125 per night for two nights bed and breakfast in July 2012. We got a great result. The hotel was easy to find, had top class facilities, rooms and restaurant which for the price were exceptional.

The staff were eager to please and unobtrusive. The room stylish and minimally furnished but to a high standard (although our music player would not work for me) and no lack of comfort.
The whole hotel was clean and tidy and efficiently run as you would expect in Germany.

Probably the pinnacle of the stay was eating at the Michelin star restaurant on site (Facil) which bizzarly is not open Saturday or Sunday. A simple email booking the week before secured us a table for two in the 5th floor bamboo surrounded restaurant (where we also ate breakfast) in seriously good quality service. We greedily went for the 8 course Classic menu because there was so much to choose from, which supplemented with a glass or two of wine from the comprehensive list, was very filling and satisfying. The meals were modern, interesting and very tasty. I thoroughly recommend the bison steak, the salmon and asparagus soup and the Greek lamb courses. Breakfast was also comprehensive and included cooked eggs, tons of breads and pastries, meats, cheese, fruit, juices and cereals all of a top quality.

We also used the lounge bar one evening which although rather expensive was friendly, welcoming and particularly well staffed by skillful cocktail makers.

Situated in Potsdammer Platz directly opposite the Sony Centre this was an easy place to get to by train and ideally located within easy walking distance of the city centre, the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust memorial, the Reichstag and much more. If you are travelling around during your stay get an ABC travel card and use all public transport for free for about £7 each per day including airport express trains.

Go to Berlin it is an interesting and entertaining place - not cheap but where is in Euro-land?
Use the Mandala - I would go back again. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ours was overlooking the main road on the 7th floor and we had no noise issues from traffic or party...
