Mercure Hotel Berlin Mitte

An excellent hotel in a good location close to the Gleisdreieck U-Bahn station. This proved very handy as it was almost too hot to walk to the main tourist sites in the city, so we travelled on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn more than planned. Berlin is an expensive city so this hotel was a good find as it was cheaper than similar hotels in the area and had excellent services. We didn't opt for breakfast as we prefer to eat out but it looked good from the menu and from what we saw other guests eating. The room and bathroom were a good size, clean and the bed was comfortable. There were daily newspapers from around the world in the lobby which was a nice touch.

Overall an excellent hotel and one in which I would stay again, hopefully with a bit more money saved up so I can enjoy the city more!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the courtyard tend to be quieter than those on the road/rail side.

This hotel exceeded expectations for us. We stayed from the 1st-5th October this year and were very impressed by this Mercure gem. The location on the actual street is a little daunting but it was no problem; it was actually nice to come back to some peace and quiet after a long day, away from all the hustle and bustle of sightseeing etc. The U-Bahn station is literally thirty seconds away from the hotel which made it perfect for travelling about the city quickly. Although the street itself looks very dreary, its actually just a very quiet street and even though out room was at the front of the hotel, the noise from the station was actually very minimal and didn't bother us at all.

The hotel was lovely on the inside and the staff were very helpful and friendly; in particular the young man who wished us a pleasant flight home the following day, despite the fact that he had finished his shift and was stood outside in his own clothes! Very impressed with the service overall.

Room was lovely, nice and spacious with good facilities; its always nice to get tea/coffee-making facilities in a hotel outside of the UK! Cleanliness was very good and the big multi-opening windows were great. Pillows were very soft but this is just personal preference!

Berlin itself is a lovely place to visit, lots of interesting historical places to go to; Topography of Terror, Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Holocaust Memorial and the East Side Gallery at the Berlin Wall to name a few! There are lovely pavement cafes at Potsdamer Platz by the Arkaden shopping centre; perfect for people watching! The zoo is always a must, but preferably not when all the kids are off!

To get to Potsdamer Platz and beyond, just get the U2 line towards Pankow from the station by the hotel, Gleisdreiek. On the way back, get the same U2 line, only towards Ruhleben. They run every few minutes.

Overall, a great trip away and we wouldn't hesitate to stay at this hotel again!

Didn't pay much, so didn't expect brilliance, but very pleasantly surprised. The hotel is advertised as Mitte but in reality it is not really central. However, about 4 minutes on the U Bahn gets you to Potsdamer Platz and from there, the city is yours. The Gleisdreick U Bahn station is almost immediately opposite the hotel entrance and the lines there can get you to pretty much all the major sights and the service is excellent. Trains are very frequent and cheap.

The hotel offers breakfast for 16 euros which we did not sample. There is also a small bar offering snack food but no restaurant to speak of. There appears to be very little on offer in the immediate area but again Potsdamer Platz is so close, and it's a great place to go in the evening. Therefore the lack of facilities is not a problem.

Our room felt a little cramped and had no air conditioning or ventilation system and therefore got hot and stuffy. In the summer this would have been a real problem but in October it wasn't so bad. Opening the windows was not an option because we overlooked the inner courtyard smoking area and there was a lot of noise and the smell of smoke drifted into our room.

However, the room was spotlessly clean and well presented, with a comfortable bed, a small desk area and nice bathroom with shower. Noise from adjoining rooms and corridors was low. We did think that in 2012 wifi should be free rather than 4 euros per hour but 3G signal was great from the aerials on the roof!

We found the staff to be friendly, able and willing to speak in English (unfortunately our German is very poor) and they obliged in checking us in early on arrival, which was greatly appreciated. If you stay, don't miss the Technik Museum around the corner, which is massive. They also have a little cafe which might be useful for breakfast.

My room in this hotel was really terrible. The single room that I got was incredibly small (which seems to apply for most or all of the rooms here) and squeezed in between a creaky staircase and the elevator shaft. The bed was placed next to the thin wall of the elevator shaft which made it almost impossible to sleep due to noise and vibration. I do not think that any hotel should use such room as a guest room but rather as a laundry room.

Staff was friendly but not helpful. Cleanliness was ok. Bathroom towels were of shabby quality. There was no air con in the room.

The hotel's location is well connected by the undergound system but there is absolutely nothing in the near surroundings. There are many hotels in Berlin that are similarly well connected via the underground system but that are at the same time located in much nicer and more interesting surroundings. Many well located hotels will provide by far more value for less or same money.

For the money I've paid it was almost excellent (I had great offer from Accor group -50%). In the beginning I was a little bit afraid, when I saw location on Google street view, as hotel is very close to railways and DHL company and I thought it will be noisy. However I had 3 perfect nights, completely quiet, big bed and I just slept like a baby. There is paid parking at 50m from hotel, U2 subway just 30m from the hotel. Why it was almost excellent? Because of no free wireless connection. C'mon people, it is 2012, to charge 10 euro for 24 hours it is just stupid.

Was there in AUG '07. Nice, clean hotel. The room and bathroom were very comfortable. Quiet area, probably because there wasn't much around the building. it seemed a bit isolated but the underground station is just across the street and the lines you can here in Gleisdreieck station cover a lot of interesting areas of the city. anyway it's perfect if you want to relax. It would have been perfect if there had been some stores and restaurants nearby.
