“Check carefully what is shown”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

The exhibition shown november 2013 is quite contemporary, and we expected this period to be covered by the Hamburger Bahnhof-museum. The consequence is that many of this museums "older" new masterpieces are stored and not shown. Most interesting was the installation by Kienholtz with radios and Wagner-music.

“for art lovers”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

It was art week, so the exhibition was of some contemporary artists. It was very interesting, but you needed to see other galleries in the city to get the full picture. Unfortunately, the other rooms were closed. Normally, there are several rooms devoted to special exhibitions, so check out beforehand what is on display at the time of your visit. (I don't know if there are lifts etc.)
We went on to the Berlinische gallery, which always curates excellent shows.

“The building is amazing, the collection less so”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

The building by Mies van der Rohe makes the visit worth while. We were less impressed by the collection itself, but we only saw the bottom floor as they were preparing a temporary exhibit on the entrance level.

“Mies van der Rohe”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

A fantastic example of Mies architecture: a gallery without walls! The actual gallery is underground. This museum is a must if you want to get a sense of the German and international trajectories of modern art.

“An architectural landmark”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

One thing to keep in mind is that you won't see the entire span of modern art from 1900 to 1960 here. The museum doesn't have enough space to show their permanent collection all at once. So check before you go to see what exhibitions are showing---they are usually themed, and will alternate c.1900-30 and c.1930-60. So you might not see the great German Expressionist art of the teens and 20s you came to Berlin to see. That said, the building is a classic "temple" like structure of steel and glass, the last project of German architect Mies van der Rohe. He also designed furniture, and you'll see his sleek chairs in the main foyer. The upper floor has temporary exhibitions; the main collections are down below. It's nice to walk around the broad terrace surrounding the museum, where you have views of the Kulturforum and canal.
