“Overpriced and overcrowded”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

If you have more than one day in Berlin, there are so many other better museums to go to for information on the history of the Berlin Wall. The entrance fee was the highest of any museum I went to in Berlin (~13 Euro) and the museum was so overcrowded that I personally did not enjoy my time there, even rushing to get out after awhile. The rooms were extremely small, which made the overcrowding worse. There is a ton of text, essentially covering every wall surface, which was overwhelming and did not point to you important passages. If you only have a few hours in Berlin and would like to get some history about the wall, I guess that attending this museum would be a decent way to get the information if you're willing to squeeze in between people to read endless passages. If you have a day or more, I would highly suggest visiting Gedenkstätte Berliner Mauer instead (free, outdoors, less touristy, and extremely moving) even though it's not in Berlin's Mitte neighborhood.

“Insider Tour”
Reviewed July 30, 2013

If you want to get a real feel for the history of Berlin from it's beginning as a city right up to the beginning, duration and end of the 2nd world war - I would highly recommend that you find out where the Insider Tours are operating from and go on this walking tour of East Berlin. Not only is it very informative, factual and accurate (I studied nightclasses on Berlin as a city) but the tour guide who took us round (Barnaby - I think his name was?) kept us entertained throughout (there were about 20 of us from Brazil, USA, Mexico, Spain, Italy and Ireland). The city is definitely worth a visit. The tour is a must.

“Interesting but poorly organised”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

The most capturing with this museum is the well documented escape histories. There is a lot of information and stories, but it is squeezed in tightly in too little space. The texts are also confusing as the order of the four languages is not consistent. In addition, the small rooms are organised almost like a maze, and it's difficult to know where to go next. As has been mentioned in several other reviews, the museum resembles a sauna on hot days. We reorganised our schedule to go on a cooler day, but as the previous day had been very hot, the rooms had not had time to cool down. This place needs air condition badly. It's a shame that material of so great an interest is laid out in a building so unfit for the purpose.

“Too much to read, help us choose!”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

It should take two days to read all the documents, the old articles. As visitors have to choose among so many things, I would have appreciated every document to be introduced by a title, an introduction, a short summary, just to let me understand what it was about, without having to read it throughly.

“Biggest mistake in Berlin”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

We were excited to learn about some history about the Cold War and Berlin Wall but was disappointed and shocked at the organization, quality and state of the museum. First of all it is overpriced and the endless, small, crowded rooms are as hot as saunas. This we could endure if it had been interesting though. The walls are plastered with text, with few variety in medium to view like artifacts for example. There is no introduction or context to anything presented and the texts are in no recognizable thematic (loosely) or chronological order. It is a nightmare. There is such potential here to make a great museum for an important and significant landmark and time in history and it is a shame that the museum of checkpoint Charlie is such an overwhelming, crowded, sweltering, poorly organized and explained exhibition.
