The Kastanienhof Hotel is well appointed, spotlessly clean with excellent transport connections. It is surrounded by wonderfull cafés and restaurants. Above all the staff and management are very welcoming and friendly. They go the extra mile for their English guests. I feel at home in the Kastanienhof.

The Hotel was in a good location in the old East Berlin. From the airport you take the S9 train for about 40 mins (3 euros) to schonehauser allee and then the M1 tram which drops you at the door. If you want to go into town just jump on the trams. The hotel was clean and good value, the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Berlin is too big and spread out to see in a few days so take the city tour from Alexander Platz for 16 euro which takes you to 15-16 points of interest, brandenberg gate, checkpoint charlie, reichstadt etc. you can jump on or off at any of the locations and another bus is past 15 minutes later. All in all a great trip with a clean friendly hotel to have as a base.Plenty of cafes and bars in the area but never seemed many people in any of them and a good thai massage by the church and 200mtrs away.

Room Tip: Rooms on third floor and just about right

There is really not much to like about this place. It is located in the former East Berlin and it lacks character and class - its that simple.

1. I stayed in September 2012 and visitors should know there is construction going on next door and across the street - big projects that are super noisy and they start early in the morning. They are likely to continue for many months - I would ask if they are done before booking. 2. Rooms have cable Internet - useless if you have an iPad. No aircon - that means keeping the window open and listening to the drunks and the trams in the street all night when it is warm or you want fresh air... 4. The bedding was less than adequate for a European hotel 5. It is a long way from any attraction in Berlin - you have to take a train and the underground to get to the hotel from the main train station...

Great location- the surrounding area is full of interesting bars, shops, markets to wander around and visit. Transport superb- trams are great and its only a short walk to more central Berlin. The staff were good- very professional but helpful and went out of their way to make sure our stay was good. Breakfast is excellent- massive choice of food and drinks. We were given a really quiet room at the back which was great. The room was big and had everything we could need (except a kettle) Not sure how noisy the front facing rooms are as its a busy street. We would certainly go back again to this hotel next time we visit.

Room Tip: Rear upstairs rooms may be quieter.

This hotel was close to the city transportation and is an older hotel. It is a family run hotel. You get what you pay for. Or should I say what is included in the Rick Steve's tour. Saying that I expected a hotel with a little more comfort and cleanliness.

A nice hotel for a weekend getaway. The staff are incredibly friendly and the location A+. I've stayed at other hotels in Berlin for the same price that were no where near the standard of this lovely family hotel.

The former East Berlin is still a bit gritty but is truly where the action is.The Hotel is ideally located in the Prenzlauer Berg neighborhood with a tram out the front door connecting you to everywhere.
The hotel is a great value. We had a very large room that included a generous sitting area. The breakfasts are super with a spread that includes oodles of bread and rolls, cheese, meat, vegetables, fruits, juices and wonderful coffee. The main breakfast room is full ofinteresting artifacts from Berlin in the early 20th century.
There are so many nearby restaurants that we had trouble choosing. Prater, the oldest beer garden in Berlin is great fun. we also had great food at La Famiglia, an Italian place down the street.
If the location works for you chooese Hotel Pension Kastanienhof; you will be glad you did.
.

Room Tip: Room 35 on the top floor is great
