Our family of four (two adults, two teens) took the Berlin City Tour City Sightseeing Hop-on, Hop-off bus from the Brandenburg Gate on May 11, 2013. These are double-decker buses (open-topped during fair weather) which cover the main sights in the Western and Eastern part of Berlin. The tickets are valid for the whole day; one can hop-on and off the buses at the many stops along the route. It cost 15 Euro each for adults and 5 Euro for kids 12 yrs. and below. We found the quality of the tour guides inconsistent. On the first bus, the tour guide was speaking alternately in German and English, but was not enunciating his words clearly. He sounded very bored, and basically just pointed out what sights we were passing, with very little added info. We had to move to another bus at Kurfurstendamm, and got a more enthusiastic-sounding guide who provided more info on the sights.
Over-all, this tour is useful to first-timers to Berlin who just need an orientation tour of the main sights, and do not require deep background info. There are two routes to choose from. They offer the two routes at a discounted price of 22 Euro (adults) and 10 Euro (kids). There is no need to pre-book; you can pay on the bus. BUT, If you have a good guidebook, you might as well take the Bus 100 or 200 (public bus) for the price of a bus ticket, about 2.40 Euro per pax for two hours (covering Zones A and B) or 6.50 Euro whole day ticket valid until 3 am the next day. The only difference is, there will be no commentary from a tour guide.
