For a wonderful history tour of Berlin, be sure to check out www.etuktuk.com. They just launched this summer, and my family had the pleasure of taking a tour with founder, Adam Rice. Not only was his commentary fascinating and insightful, but he took the time to cater to our energy and interests.
But perhaps the best part of eTukTuk is the vehicle itself! Its electric motor is quiet and smog-free and its compact size allowed us to bob and weave throughout the city center. Beginning at “Check Point Charlie,” we explored the side streets and ingeniously converted urban spaces since the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, as well as the majestic national buildings, cathedrals and “Museum Island” along the Spree River.
We stopped to take in the emotionally powerful Käthe Kollwitz sculpture within the Peace Memorial (at what was originally an Armory) along the main procession street in Berlin, the moving Holocaust Memorial in the center of East Berlin, as well as the site at Humboldt University where the historic Nazi “book burning” is represented by a striking configuration of empty bookshelves representing the 20,000 books that were destroyed. Because of eTukTuk, we were able to avoid traffic, lines and the cumbersome crawl of the massive diesel tour buses. Truly a wonderful tour!
