We stayed four nights in a comfort room at Gates Hotel. The location is excellent - close to a U-Bahnstation and several restaurants and cafes in the peaceful neighbourhood. Even though our room faced the street there were absolutely no problems with noise. The room was good - spacious and clean.
But there vere several details that didn't make the stay more than 'ok'. The staff at the reception were mainly nice, but there was this one lady, who definitely should work somewhere else than in a hotel reception. She was unfriendly - almost hostile against some clients, including us after having caused here extra work with the safe in our room. After all we were never able to use the safe, since it wasn't worth while to remind the reception that is didn't work (no instructions either...).
The pillows were terrible, but luckily we managed to get extra pillows. The breakfast was ok, but quite boring, so do not include breakfast in your reservation. There is nice cafes almost next door to the hotel - in those you get far better value for money. Nowhere else have I been served scrambled eggs with nothing but boiled eggs...
There is a minisize-bar in the hotel, but apparently it's open only Fri-Sat evenings. No minibar in the room, but there is a vending machine where you can get cold drinks - in case you have the right sort of coins. If you visit the bar and want a relaxing and peaceful moment, then do not get involved in discussions with the bartender...
A peculiar detail in the hotel is that you have to pay for the room at arrival. The lady at the reception said this is hotel policy, since clients have left without paying "and the manager doesn't like this".
Due to the location I could stay at Gates Novum again for just one or two nights on a working trip - if the price is ok. But it will definately not be my choice the next time I want to spend some leisure time in Berlin
