This is a beautiful if unusual Catholic cathedral. First thing to be aware of is that many of the reviews below have mistaken this review page as the review page for the Berliner Dom - The Berlin Cathedral - which the Cathedral of St. Hedwig is not! Therefore, in the reviews below, when reviewers are talking about the "tour to the top of the cathedral" or the "entrance fee", they are actually talking about a different place.

This cathedral is very special. It has two levels, and effectively a different church seating area, the upper being used for large services, and the lower for small services. There are also several chapels on the lower levels, commemorating former cardinals, bishops, and other cathedral staff, including those active in the resistance against the Third Reich.

This is a very special cathedral, with a huge dome and oculus, making it unusually structured (and simple) for a catholic cathedral. But it is very special, spritual, and moving. I strongly recommend a visit. If you can, try to make an organi recital: the acoutisics is amazing!

St. Hedwig's has the very rare distinction of being a Catholic cathedral commissioned by a Protestant, King Frederick the Great of Prussia. When Frederick added the heavily-Catholic provence of Silesia to his domain, he decided to build a Catholic church in Berlin as a present to his new subjects. According to legend, when asked what this new church should look like he took a Silesian teacup and turned it upside down. Hence, the church looks like a giant dome with the rest of the building an afterthought. Despite his magnanimous gesture, he still had it built off of the street to remind his Catholic subjects that Lutheranism was the state religion.

We did not go up to the dome, but we did attend Sunday Mass here. Since a lot of tourists go here for Mass, they did add some English into the service. There isn't a lot to see on the inside compared to most European cathedrals. Like most historic buildings in the area, it was heavily damaged during World War II. Fortunately, the repairs make that fact barely noticeable.

We paid but it seemed as though some chose not to and walked in anyway. There is not much to see inside other than the main body of the cathedral which is stunning. We went upstairs and you can view the whole of Berlin from there but its not very high up. Good shop with some bargain gifts, especially little brass copies of the weather vane to fit in Easyjet carryon for gifts. It was crowded when we went and would have been impossible to get a peaceful moment.

We came across this 2nd Cathedral by accident- we read on its boards history of anti-Nazi stance and heard the beautiful choir voices leaching out. Organ recital by donation mittwoch 3pm we attended, finishing with Rutter and beginning with Bach etc was amazing due to acoustics. It's simple interior is contemplative and beautiful.

Make sure you pay to do the tour - no guide or audio but well explained with board en route. Plus you get to go right up to the top of the dome and the view down into the Cathedral is amazing. Tiring as no lift - just endless steps, but worth it.
