“Great Airport”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

The fact that this is really the only place in Berlin Germany which was the heart of the Third Reich that still has the Nazi Eagles is astounding. Just for that very reason and the reason the Nazis built this airport for the time they did made this remarkable to see.

“Take a tour- wish we did! But still fun for hobbyists”
Reviewed September 22, 2013 via mobile

Went on a windy day and people with kites were everywhere! Kite surfers, skateboarders with kites, little carts attached to kites, etc. Rollerbladers, runners, walkers, people with remote controlled cars, dancers, and a DJ could all be found during our visit.

Wish we would have taken a tour they do on weekends but didn't know about them until after we visited! So much history at this old airport, but most people seemed to prefer to just walk around and people watch. We also saw people having BBQs, people dancing, and families exploring. Didn't see a lot of bathrooms, so not sure where to go. I'd recommend figuring out your plan before you go- bring drinks too! Something here for everyone!

“Beautifully historic”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

We were here for the Berlin Festival, and as a music venue it's awesome. But Tempelhof is so much more than just that. It's like stepping back into the 1930s. The terminal building is beautifully art deco and the rest of the airport in original condition too. Even the old VOR dome is still in place and it's great to see the "Berlin Tempelhof. Field elevation 164 feet" sign still in place. During the festival we were able to explore the old hangars as well as move freely about the apron. It would definitely be worth checking out a tour here to see it at a more laid back pace, especially if you're a fan of buildings that transport you back to a different era. Use the U-Bahn station Platz der Luftbrücke, it's only a short walk to the main terminal building.

“Interesting remnants of Nazi and Cold War history”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

Tempelhof airport is typical national socialist architecture. This massive complex was once a state of the art airport with an interesting system of accommodating planes pulling up right to the building under special canopies. You can still see the nazi eagles on the facades, minus swastikas. This was also the site of Die Luftbrücke or Air Lift: the allied program of bringing by air absolutely everything needed to support life in an otherwise Soviet sealed West Berlin.
Or, if you just want to hang on a beautiful day, go to the airfield: one of the largest parks in Berlin and where else can you walk on a real runway that still has its markings?
If you make the trek to Tempelhof, it is worth looking for Schwerbelastungskörper: the only tangible remnant of Hitler's vision of a new Reich capital to rival Rome.

“Wow factor”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

I emailed Tempelhof late one night to check the English speaking tours & with typical German efficiency I had a reply early the next morning. At present they are only on Saturdays at 3 & Sundays at 2. Best place to travel to is Platz der Luftbrucke, turn left & walk from there. It's about 5 mins. Our guide was a Dutch guy named Hans & he admitted he loves Tempelhof, this showed in his enthusiasm for his subject. There is a lot of walking involved so make sure you go to the toilet & grab a drink from the vending machine before you start. Use the welcome card to get discount. We saw all what you expect but also managed to get out on to the roof & go inside the replica DC4 that is there in respect of the Berlin airlift. If you are interested in the Nazis this is the place to visit, the building is awesome. One thing the Nazis did well was impressive buildings. It's amazing now & to think this was built in the 1930s. You also go down to the bunkers & see the underground track where forced labourers fixed damaged aircraft. What makes a great tour is your guide but Hans made it fantastic.
