“Good value, good breakfast, convenient location”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I debated between Motel One and the nearby Meininger hotel. Both are about a block from the train station and Meininger is a bit less expensive. I was thinking "how different could it be?"

I am very happy that I stayed at Motel One and not Meininger's! I mistakenly walked into Meininger's first. The lobby and outside the front door was packed with teens and 20-somethings. It was a zoo! Noisy and chaotic, and I expect that it was noisy in the rooms as well. In contrast, Motel One was an oasis of calm. Clearly it's not targeted toward that student / backpacker / 20-something "let's explore the world on $10/day" crowd.

Motel One was value-priced and I was very pleased with the accommodations. I stayed for 4 nights. The room isn't big (bed, small chair and tiny table/desk) but it works fine for 1-2 people. It was clean, had a good shower with plenty of hot water and a comfy bed. Flat screen TV on the wall, no frig or coffee/tea service. There isn't a closet but there are built-in shelves and a rod on the wall that serves for hanging clothes. There's little space to lay out your suitcase so best to unpack a bit and put the case in a corner. I found the breakfast buffet to be plentiful - meats, cheeses, rolls, nutella (yum!), yogurt, hard boiled eggs, tomato, cucumber, fruit salad, coffee, juice. All for only 7.50 Euro, which is a good deal. Each day my breakfast filled me up until early evening. There are no restaurants nearby, except for the fast food joints and shops in the train station. However, I was happy to buy a glass of wine at the bar and take it up to my room to relax.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. Their WiFi worked well in the room and is complimentary. Obviously very convenient to the train station though I ended up walking almost everywhere - the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate are a ~10-15 minute walk and the Museum Island (Pergamon, Neues, Bode) is ~20-30 minute walk. Even the Kulturforum is ~20-30 minute walk away, not bad at all.

If you arrive by train, make sure to go out the Europaplatz exit, and not the Washingtonplatz exit, otherwise you'll have to walk around the entire (large) station. Not fun late at night in the cold and dark, lugging a suitcase.

Should I ever return to Berlin, I'll stay at this hotel for sure.

Room Tip: I was on the 11th floor, facing the street. Had a nice view of Berlin except that it was cloudy / fo...

So far, I’ve found Motel One hotels to be quite similar in many ways all over the country. Its a fair deal, I sleep well there.

As with other Motel One’s I’ve visited, the room is very clean both visually and olfactoraly. The room isn’t large, but big enough for one person to stay a night or two. The fireplace-video that pops on the TV when you enter the room is a nice twist (the one in Hamburg had an aquarium video).

I’ve stayed at this particular Motel One before, and while I didn’t sign up for the breakfast this time, I did the last time I stayed. Breakfast was completely overrun, like a beehive, at primetime (when, unfortunately, I needed to be down there as well). A number of tables were empty but not cleared away and some of the food items were “sold out” and not replenished.

I’m not sure if that was because of some major event in town or if that is normal for this particular Motel One, but it made it easy for me to make the decision to eat somewhere else this time.

Other than that, the room is fine, as is the bathroom, no complaints. One exception: there isn’t an outlet anywhere near the desk, so if you have an aging laptop battery like I do with the need to plug in, you’ll be doing your work from the bed (which has outlets next to it).

All in all, I would recommend the place and will stay there again - you can’t beat the location, just kitty-corner across from the central train station. Maybe I’ll try breakfast again next time...

Room Tip: I don't think it matters, even if you face the street you don't hear the noise

Stayed 5 nights when visiting Berlin for the first time. Room was spotless and comfortable with a terrific power shower;, staff courteous, helpful and English speaking. Love the ground floor layout with ample seating and a welcoming bar to fall into after a long day's sightseeing. Good breakfast buffet with plenty of fresh fruit salad. One of Berlin's great strengths is its public transport system which is accessible just across the road. Very good value for money. I would certainly stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the front[Invalidenstrasse] and on the top floors command a view of the city including...

Very happy with this hotel, has a unique style about it being low cost but high standard, the rooms are quite small barely room to place you suit cases, but the lay out is good space usage, there is a flat screen TV on the wall.

The rooms are spotless and modern, but there is no Tea or Coffee, or fridge in the room, you must buy a drink from the 24 hr front bar.

The location is excellent for inter city train travellers like myself, just walk out and across the road and you are there.

It is also an easy walk to the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate.

There are no real cafes shops or restaurants nearby, but the Hbf station has a huge array of cafes and places to eat inside. Otherwise you will have to catch the subway to another area.

Staff are OK, but one downside was that I had to catch an early train and asked for an early basic breakfast coffee and toast and the guy at the front desk said he would not really be able to do it bar a cup of coffee, despite that we had paid for it we left nothing the next morning.

One thing we did notice was that there appeared to be a large number of refugees some with injuries staying at the hotel, the Government apparently uses this hotel as a temporary hostel. Or maybe it was a one off.

Overall this hotel is a good pick for train travellers.

First time, we did stayd in that "Motel ONE" Hotel in Berlin - it was great. although it is a just 2 Star hotel - it has a very attractive Design and looks more then a 4 Star Hotel. Pretty much People always on Reception and in lobby, but Staff was always very friendly. In the nearby Area not many Shops or Restaurants, but the Train Station isjustfew steps away - with a large Range of Restaurants and Shops - very nice!

As train travellers, the Motel 1 Hauptbahnhof was perfectly located just across the road from the new main Berlin station. Check-in staff were friendly and efficient while the dark brown and bright blue Motel 1 décor and uniforms add a distinctive style. Walking in from 2 degrees outside, the first thing you see is a giant TV screen with a huge roaring fire on it – very inviting.
Our room was reminiscent of Ibis hotels; modern, small, a tiny but functional bathroom, a TV, minimal storage space and floor space. We had enough room for our bags on the floor in front of the windows. While there is a busy road outside, the double-glazed windows blocked out all noise apart from the occasional emergency vehicles. The room lights have an interesting touch. When they are first turned on, they don’t got to full brightness, but start off dim, then gradually get brighter. This is especially appreciated with the bed reading lights. The 4 bathroom towels and floor towel were good quality, thick and soft. The wall-mounted TV had a multiple choice of channels including BBC and CNBC.
Breakfast looked satisfactory although we didn’t indulge. It was €7.50 but we choose a healthier, inexpensive fresh fruit meal.
WiFi at Motel1 is a little difficult. For 24 hours access in your room it costs €5. In the huge downstairs lobby its free for 2 hours, but you have to get a voucher from the desk. However at busy times of checking in and checking out you might wait for up to 7 minutes to get your voucher. My wife had a problem with her Ipad which failed to connect several times, and when it finally did connect, it was so slow as to be un-usable. I saw other internet users also complaining. I know you get what you pay for, but I think a better system could be employed.
Generally, it’s an excellent establishment with fast, friendly, efficient service along with clean rooms and amenities. Price-wise, it’s a little more expensive than it should be but the excellent location make it a very popular choice.
Recommended for train travellers and yes, I’d definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Two supermarkets in the Hauptbahnhof can keep you supplied. Many eateries also in the hauptbahnhof.

Although its pretty good Location - just few minutes away from the Berlin Main Train Station (Hauptbahnhof) and the very modern and cosy Design - it was not very expensive and we did stayed there for 3 nights. Friendly Check In and also in the Bar, the Staff was friendly. Breakfast was average, but all was fresh and their coffee was great. USE of WIFI was possible. From the close Train Station, we had very good connections to most of the main attractions from bErlin!
