If you're staying in one of the many hotels in this part of the Mitte area in Berlin, then you'll have noticed that the hotel breakfasts appear to be woefully expensive and poor value. The Balzac is a terrific alternative. For the same price as a "medium" coffee, you can get a "large" which is so "large" you'll spend a chunk of the morning drinking it. But why not! This cafe is perfectly positioned for observing the busy Berliners hurrying up and down the street outside.
If you're an animal lover, there's a bonus! Little birds hop around your feet looking for whatever crumbs you might let fall - and that is inside the cafe as well as outside.
Great coffee, great pastries, great atmosphere! I love it. And unlike the hotels, you don't pay 15 to 25 Euro for some breakfast!
