“Balzac on Karl Liebknecht-Strasse”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

If you're staying in one of the many hotels in this part of the Mitte area in Berlin, then you'll have noticed that the hotel breakfasts appear to be woefully expensive and poor value. The Balzac is a terrific alternative. For the same price as a "medium" coffee, you can get a "large" which is so "large" you'll spend a chunk of the morning drinking it. But why not! This cafe is perfectly positioned for observing the busy Berliners hurrying up and down the street outside.

If you're an animal lover, there's a bonus! Little birds hop around your feet looking for whatever crumbs you might let fall - and that is inside the cafe as well as outside.

Great coffee, great pastries, great atmosphere! I love it. And unlike the hotels, you don't pay 15 to 25 Euro for some breakfast!

“Nice choice, friendly service....”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We are amazed to see the recent poor reviews of this place as our experience was nothing but positive.
During our weeks stay we ate breakfast at this place several times really enjoying the fresh orange juice/cofee/croissants/pastries.
The staff were really very pleasant & helpful, couldn't criticise the way we were treated in any way.
Certain aspects of the cafe did look like a refurbishment was due, some of the seats were a little worn, but the place was very clean/tidy & seemed popular.

“I'd rather have a coffee at Dunkin Donuts”
Reviewed April 24, 2011

Coffee at Dunkin Donuts is bad, but it's better than the one at Cafe Balzac, a cheap and lousy imitation of Starbucks. Staff is unmotivated and pushing it to "rude". Pastry was bad, not even the croissant tasted nicely, it was dry and flavorless; marble cake was rock hard, no moist at all!

I would let the bad coffee and pasty pass if the service would've been good, but the service was even worse that their bad products.

“Chain coffee shop with poor service.”
Reviewed January 1, 2011

Unmotivated staff prepared the drinks for pick-up at the counter. My complaint about a chair that had a nail sticking out that tore a hole in my jeans was heard and ignored. Probably the chair is still there–at least it wasn't removed during the two hours we were in the café.

The drinks we got (hot chocolate and vanilla milk) were tasty, comparable to Starbucks, but one was not the drink we ordered. Atmospherically, it was weird that no music was played. The chairs were uncomfortable.
