Owner description: Often a tough ticket, the Berlin Philharmonic features some of the best classical music to be had in Germany.

I played in orchestra in Jr. High and High School, but quickly moved to rock music so I am not a lifelong classical music fanatic. But it is certainly a cut above other, even well known orchestras. The hall, the conducting, the musicianship it all comes together.

Excellent performance of Mahler 6. The Philharmoniker is spacious and a short walk from Potsdamer Platz.

Was attending a Berlin Philharmonic concert here last Thursday evening. We decided we would like a glass of champlagne before the concert.Oh dear - silly me- had brought no cash just my trusted plastic -not good enough for the Philharmonie.Incredibly and very frustratingly the hall does not take any cards for drinks or food but you can use your card to buy CDs and DVDs etc.I cannot believe that an international centre such as this only takes cash - how are you as a visitor supposed to know this in advance?Oh and of course there are no ATMs anwhere to be found unless you want to run out into Potsdamer Platz -but not easy once you've had your expensive ticket (incidentally bought with a card!!) scanned on entry to the hall.Very disappointing and I think also not a very shrewd business tactic. To boot the Hall could do with a coat of paint and new carpets but the auditorium itself is excellent and the Berlin Philharmonic did give a vey good peerformance of Mahler's 6th Symphony.

By pure luck, we managed to buy tickets to the final season's performance at the Waldbuhne. We had not realised how lucky we were until we were at the concert and were speaking with some Berliners seated next to us.

The performance was, perhaps needless to say - just stunning! I do have a few tips however that may be useful to others visiting Berlin in summer and want to see a concert at this wonderful outdoor venue:

1. Check the website frequently and be prepared to book by credit card immediately as tickets may sell out in days - sometimes hours. They do post tickets worldwide and we received ours (on the other side of the world) within 2 weeks of ordering online.

2. Be prepared to be in queues for hours! The walks from the station to the amphitheatre is only several hundred metres, but it took us 2 hours because of the 22,000 people at the concert. Take water, raincoat - even snacks! A few enterprising locals do sell some pretzels etc.

3. Note that all backpacks and bags are inspected at the entrance - one of the reasons for the slow entry. They will take glass bottles and SLR cameras and issue you a receipt to collect it again after the concert. (It is to prevent unauthorised images being taken of the orchestra). Small cameras are OK.

4. It took us an hour to leave the venue and get back to the station afterwards. The trains were very frequent.

Enjoy!!
