“Fill yourself as at home”
Reviewed December 27, 2013 via mobile

Fill yourself as at home in the proper region of West Berlin five minutes walk from Q-damm. Very affable owners, lovely decorated rooms with extremely high ceilings, good enough breakfasts and delicious restaurant Leibniz Klause across the street. Self-service bar with selection of drinks. Most of the rooms looks in the quiet yard.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when arriving at the hotel - it has no street frontage at all, and you merely walk into a building through its common door then take an old and fragile seeming slow elevator or stairs (92 of them in total) up to their fifth floor location, then have to buzz to be admitted into the hotel through a solid locked door.

But after getting in to the hotel, I was instantly rewarded with a warm welcome from owner Gerd and his wife, and enjoyed a comfortable two night stay along with other members of the small group I was leading.

The hotel rooms are generally spacious, and reasonably comfortable. They aren't overflowing with the latest state of the art amenities, and the bathrooms also are a bit less than luxurious, while remaining clean and functional, but sometimes you realize and appreciate that a hotel experience can be more than just the abstract amenities.

The atmosphere in the hotel was friendly and positive - for example, an open honesty bar in the hotel's dining room, and the location is brilliant for most visitors to Berlin. Gerd's recommendations for restaurants (and there are hundreds to choose from within reasonable walking distance) were all accurate and helpful.

So, although some aspects of the total experience were not what one would expect from a traditional generic franchise brand hotel, if you have an open mind and are willing to enjoy a more personal experience, you'll probably find the differences to be positive rather than negative. Indeed, this is such a nice hotel that you'll find yourself wanting to stay in the hotel rather than spend all your time out touring around Berlin!

Note that my five stars are based on comparing this hotel to other similar style and standard small B&B/Inn type hotels in Berlin, not based on comparing the hotel to ultra-luxurious five star hotels such as the Adlon (which I've also stayed at and enjoyed).

Some other reviewers have commented on noise issues. Our group had rooms on all sides of the hotel and while some people mentioned that the rooms weren't whisper quiet all night long, no-one felt that the small occasional level of outside noise seeping in to the room was a problem.

We stayed in the winter, and the hotel was well heated. It doesn't have air conditioning, which might be an issue if staying in a (rare!) summer heatwave, although most rooms seem to have large windows which can open wide to let fresh air in.

All in all, a lovely experience and I look forward to visiting again.

I have stayed at Hotel Art Nouveau on many occasions over the years, either alone or with my partner, and have always received a warm welcome from the owners who make you feel very much at home. There is an open kitchen and dining room where you can serve yourself hot or cold drinks at anytime of the day or night, and where you can find a plentiful buffet breakfast in the mornings. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and very well kept, each tastefully decorated in an individual and stylish manner. The hotel and the building it is situated in retain many splendid early 20th century architectural features, including the wonderful wooden lift. Anyone expecting totally Art Nouveau themed rooms will be disappointed but I personally love the eclectic mix of antique and modern furnishings. The hotel is well located in terms of transport to other parts of Berlin including, Tegel airport, and is temptingly close to one of the City's upmarket shopping streets and the famous bars and restaurants around Savignyplatz.

Despite my request, when I reconfirmed my reservation two weeks prior, for a quiet room, the responding email assured me of a “quite” room. Then our assigned room overlooked the 24/7 very noisy Leibnizstrasse. We were changed the following night to a room overlooking the “green”. However, despite the hotel name and stylish website, neither room was furnished in the Art Noveau style – a more accurate descriptor might be Ikea hodge podge.

On top of that, the person checking us in completely forgot that we needed 2 keys in addition to the room key and when we returned after dinner, we were locked out until someone with a key appeared.

Room Tip: A prior traveler suggested asking for a "green" room. That sounds wise - since we saw some...

I spent 12 days at the Hotel Art Nouveau in July and every one of them was memorable. The hotel excellent location, charm, spacious and well appointed rooms, the abundant and delicious breakfast, the immaculately kept room by the efficient staff, and the owners hospitality evident in every small detail, vastly enhanced my visit to Berlin. I can't wait to go back! I felt safe and welcomed at the Art Nouveau, definitely not your ordinary hotel, think of it more as a home-away-from-home.

Room Tip: My room faced the internal courtyard and it was quiet and cool even in the warmest nights in July.

My husband and I stayed at the Art Nouveau Hotel for a couple of days late August/early September. The hotel is situated in a quiet and discreet building. The old style elevator alone makes you feel like you are in a museum (it's perfectly functioning and safe though). We heard each room has its own individual and distinctive theme and style. Ours was Asian (Japanese/Chinese/Balinese), spacious, clean, tastefully decorated and had all necessities (large bed, comfy bedding, desk, small tv, even hair dryer, etc) and huge windows with room darkener curtains giving you the option of making the room bright or deem lighted. Our room (#1) had a view on a little courtyard, very quite and lush. The common dining room area of the hotel was my favorite space: charming, large, welcoming and communal. Breakfast is very delicious, varied, and generous. There's nice music playing and magazines and books to read, and there's also free wifi in the hotel.
The owner, Mr Gerd is almost always at the premises and is courteous, helpful and very friendly. He'd go out of his way to accommodate his guests. It really feels like "home".
The hotel is also conveniently located on Leibnizstrasse with plenty of stores and bakeries and bars and restaurants nearby. It's only a few steps away from Kurfürstendamm Boulevard, Berlin's own Champs Élysées, ideal to stroll around and take in the beautiful city. We were very satisfied with the hotel and would definitely recommend it!

The hotel has a grand old Berlin feel to it. It is located on the 4th floor of an old, quaint building. Our room was spacious and decorated very well. The staff was efficient and friendly. The owner was gracious and helpful with restaurant recommendations. We ate at all of them and were so impressed.
