“Outstanding art in a disappointing setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

There is no doubting this gallery has a first rate collection of western art. However, the building is functional and has little character. It was very quiet when we visited on a Friday afternoon. You are charged 10 Euro - it makes you appreciate all the more the free access provided by other countries to their own collections all the more creditable.

“Some excellent art but a soulless atmosphere”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

The gallery provides a very good survey of european art from the early renaissance to the 18th century but it would benefit from a livelier approach to the organization of the collection. There is little explanation to help make sense of the many rooms of "madonna and child" and essentially nothing at all in english. There are some exquisite pictures - notably the Vermeer of the Girl with the Pearl Necklace and several wonderful Boticellis but they are easy to miss amongst their many dreary contemporaries.

The gallery itself should be great. it is light, airy and spacious but somehow the atmosphere saps all the joy from the art. The guards seemed to have been hired for their surly attitude and prison warder style demeanor. Even the groups of schoolchildren seemed to have bored into silent immobility.

If you have the 3-day museum pass (great value at about 24euro) then do try to include this museum on your trip but there are much better places to visit in Berlin if your time is limited.

“Gemaeldegalerie”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2013

Unless you really REALLY enjoy seeing MANY different paintings of the birth of Jesus and the Cruifixation, save your euros and your time for another museum. There are other paintings, but nothing very notable.

“Definitely worth going”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

I don't know much about art and all that, but I think that this is a great gallery. It has a large collection of works by famous painters and even for the less known ones, they are still interesting to see. It was such a nice way to spend a quiet afternoon, watching to the stories told through these gorgeous paintings. it requires at least two hours to walk in all the rooms.

The easiest way to get to this gallery is by taking bus no. 200 (from Alexanderplatz or from the Zoologischer Garten bus station) and get off at the Tiergartenstr. stop. Then, follow the sign that says "Kulturforum", as Gemaeldegalerie is one of the buildings in this cultural village. Across the street from it is Neue Nationalgalerie. The other way to get there is by walking from Potsdamer Platz Station, which takes about 10-15 minutes. It is included in the Museum Pass and I believe you can get a discount for the ticket if you have a Welcome Card or a full-time student ID card.

“Stunning pictures in a modern gallery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2013

A great range of high quality paintings including Giotto, Durer, Van Eyck, Rembrandt, etc.
You need a day to do it justice - the on site cafe is a great place to sit/reflect
