This museum has a huge collection of portraits (mainly 16th-18th century). That is it's strength and at the same time it's weakness. For those who love portraits - a great place. You walk from highlight to highlight. For those who only like portraits the museum does not provide enough contrast or variation to keep you interested. After a while every room looks like the other. It turned out that for our family the visit was either too short or too long.

What could be better than a combination of the two? The Wall, and it's sinister history, melded with modern and evocative art. It was a thought-provoking experience to walk past a piece of history and to think of everything it has meant.

Thsi is one of the world's great art galleries but difficult to find. My tip is that as you walk down Potsdamer Strasse when you get to the State Library, turn right and cross the road and continue until you come to the gallery. Inside from one wing you have a huge and important collection of the Northern European Renaissance with an intro with a couple of paintings from 1250. Then it's Cranachs, Memling, Durer, van Eyck, Holbeins, van der Weyderns thru to Breugal and Rembrandt. Oh and I forgot to mention Vermeer too. The other wing starts with Italian paintings and we only scratched the surface but there's Titian and Caravaggio for starters.

Alas we had not left enough time to do justice to the classic collections in the Gemaldegalerie (there were special exibitions too which we had to miss). We were there on a Saturday afternoon and were astonished to find it so quiet. We particularly wanted to see the 15-17C paintings from northern Europe and we were delighted by the high quality of what we saw, especially Holbein, Van Eyck, the Cranachs, and Rembrandt (a roomful!); but there was so much else, notably lots of Botticellis, a lovely Giotto and masses of other wonderful Italian paintings we had to move past too quickly. There was even a splendid Raeburn! We'll have to allow more time if we manage to get back to Berlin. One point to watch - it is not obvious where the entrances to the building might be - we got it completely wrong and lost a lot of time as a result. They are on the E and SE sides of the building - the signposting isn't very good, especially late on a winter's afternoon.

My art loving friends and I agree, this is not a very interesting museum.
I would recommend it only for art enthusiasts which are very interested in the period and artists exhibited. Other than that - you can skip it.
