“City trumps the museum any day”
3 of 5 starsReviewed July 10, 2012
Meh. The Daniel Libeskind architecture from the outside is compelling, but once inside you see they squandered the opportunity to make a brilliant statement. You get the idea that they had more space to fill than they could afford good content instead including way too many tchotchkes. It is possible to appreciate and learn far more wandering around the city. The artifacts they have can be found anywhere around the world, so while in Berlin, I would recommend instead spending your time in the LIVING museum of the city of Berlin. Of the 180 museums in Berlin, I'd rate this one a "C".

This museum is about the Jewish people, not focusing predominantly on the holocaust. Covering the Jewish faith, the beginnings and culture I learned so much. Some displays are interactive and it covers a collection of both artifacts, art and belongings donated.

The layout, especially on the bottom floor (about the holocaust and exile) makes you confused and in limbo just as the architect planned no doubt. With "memory voids" of space making you feel empty as if something is missing in memory to those who were lost. They also have a special exhibition which changes a few times a year, currently about the Torah.

It is of a good size, so put aside 2-4 hours to really enjoy and embrace all the the museum
