“Comfortable and good value. Would certainly revisit and recommend”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

Just returned from a trip to Berlin, where I spent 3 nights in this hotel. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Alexanderplatz station, where you can access the S and U Bahn network. I had a little trouble initially finding it, its entrance is tucked around the corner, but once you know where to look it's fine. The room itself was clean, tidy, large enough, and good value. I can't comment on the food as i went out each day but I dare say it's fine. Reception was efficient and friendly, if I came back to Berlin again I would most likely return here since it's close to a major station, was perfectly ok, and is good value.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor away from the road if possible

We have often stayed at this chain over the years and know what to expect, generally. Unfortunately, the AC was not working (not sure if it was just our room or if it was too early in the year for the hotel to switch it on) and we tried to sleep with the windows open as it was too warm, even in early May. Unfortunately, our window was right above the main entrance to the hotel, so it was noisy until all hours, either with smokers chatting rather loudly outside the entrance or with the sound of luggage with rollers going over the cobblestones, or just plain traffic noise. We were in room 117, I suggest trying a room whose second digit is at least 2 or 3, as it will be further down the hall and away from the entrance. If the AC is working it will probaby be fine, as when the window was shut it was quite quiet in the room, just rather warm! Wifi worked OK once the guy in the lobby showed me the trick!

My wife and I stayed in the Ibis Budget for 3 nights at the end of April/beginning of May. The hotel was in a pretty good location - only 10 minutes walk from Alexanderplatz (print out directions/map to make it easier to find when you arrive), although there is a tram stop immediately outside the hotel if you don't fancy the walk.

The room was very clean (as was the hotel) but, as you might expect for a budget hotel, quite sparse. The only furniture in the room was the bed, a chair and a small shelf/desk top on the wall. There was limited room to hang clothes, so our cases had to be used as clothes storage - we didn't spend much time in the room though, so it was not really an issue. The shower was nice and roomy, and there was a separate toilet. Reception staff were very pleasant and helpful and there was a locked room where we could store our luggage on the last day after checking out.

The breakfast was excellent quality and good value - it was much easier and quicker to get breakfast in the hotel than go to the trouble of going out for breakfast even though there were cafes reasonably close.

The only problem we had was on the first night, when the next room's occupants thought it a good idea to hold a party in their room until the earlier hours - other than that, the hotel was generally peaceful.

We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel if you are looking for a cheap stay in Berlin - we would certainly stay there again.

Whilst the clue is in the name 'Budget' and the facilities may be fairly basic you do get excellent value for money. This hotel was a great base for a 3 night weekend trip.

The hotel feels modern and clean; the reception staff are friendly and helpful enough. It felt a bit odd having a shower with a glass door that led directly into the hotel room, so if you're sharing a twin you may need to be with close relatives/friends, or be broad minded! There were no luxuries such as drawers, wardrobe, hairdryer etc in the room; however there was plenty of space. We took our own kettle, as the room lacked tea and coffee facilities, as is often the case in hotels across Europe. The beds were comfortable and we did sleep well, even though we had a corner room at the front of the hotel and the associated road noise from the busy road junction just outside – we didn’t hear any noise from within the hotel at all. We checked in very early with no problems and were able to leave luggage after we checked out.

We had no problems at all with the free wifi, even when streaming - this was a big bonus in a budget hotel. English TV is available, being limited to News channels.

Location is just a few minutes away from Alexanderplatz; I was travelling with an elderly relative, so the fact that the tram stops right outside was great, although it was really only a 5-10 min walk max into the main square. You can use the same tickets on the trams as you would on the S Bahn and U Bahn trains and busses in the city. We got the 3 day Welcome Card (ABC) on arrival, allowing us to travel from Schoenberg Airport direct to Alexanderplatz, as well as on all forms of public transport over 72 hours. It also gave us fairly decent discounts on many of the attractions (inc. the City Circle sightseeing busses which are easy to catch in Alexanderplatz at the back of the Park Inn hotel, and the ticket lasts 2 days). You can buy the Welcome Card from the ticket machines at the airport. If you're not intending on visiting many of the paid attractions, it would be cheaper to get regular travel passes.

Hotel is within walking distance to Alexanderplatz (10 to 15 min), which is a very central tourist attractions. There is a train station at Alexanderplatz where you can go anywhere from there. We actually used the sightseeing bus to move around, since Berlin is big and things are spreaded out. Hotel is clean and area is quite. There is a tram station in front of the hotel, but we never used since we walked to Alexanderplatz everyday. We took a cab from the hotel to Berlin HB and I believe it was around 18 EUR.

This is our second time staying in a Ibis budget hotel. It was bigger than the one in Krakow, with the shower separated from the toilet. No kettle nor hair dryer was provided as expected. The shower was weak and the walls were not very soundproofed. We could hear guests upstairs walking and showering during the night and we had a hard time sleeping at night. The wifi, though complimentary, was very unstable. It logged out automatically in a frequent manner and one needed a number of clicks to get back online, which was quite frustrating.

Most things at this hotel are fine. The staff is generally friendly, the rooms are clean and well-kept, etc.
BUT: They advertize free WiFi, but the WiFi does not work correctly. As most people these days, I rely on having internet access in my hotel room. I need to get to my email, to look up maps and activities nearby, etc.
Unfortunately, this hotel makes it impossible or very frustrating to use the internet. A complicated login procedure, then a connection that drops out constantly, and service that's so slow that it is basically unusable. Occasionally there are a couple of minutes when the speed is OK, so you get your hopes up, but then it just stops in the middle of downloading the next mail message. Grrr!
If you don't need the internet, you'll have a fine stay here. Otherwise, stay away.
