The Old Templehof Airport, which closed for flying use about 10 years ago, has been turned, willingly (by the city) or otherwise into a vast park. The terminal building is still there, although you just about cannot get into it. But the runways and taxiways and all the outdoor ancillary spaces are still there, plus a decommissioned plane or two, and the skateboarding, kite boarding, roller blading, bike riding, jogging, running, all make perfect use of runways that look to be a mile long or thereabouts. and you go out and stand in the middle of the airfield, and you are scarcely aware you are in this bustling city. It is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon (bring sunblock, wear good walking shoes). Bring food too.
