We contacted Jeremy of Berlin Experts because of the wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor. Since he was going to be on holiday himself, Jeremy referred us to David Meeres. David is a Brit completing his PhD in Berlin ; he had lived in the city since 2008. He was a terrific tour guide. So knowledgeable! We communicated back and forth on email before we arrived to tailor the tour so that it would be interesting and engaging for all of us.
David met us outside of our hotel around 9:30 a.m. and we spent the next 4 hours walking Berlin together. We saw the Berlin Wall, Topography of Terror (an excellent exhibit chronicling the rise and fall of Nazi Germany), the Bradenburg Gate, The Tiergarten, the Reichstag, the site of Hilter's bunker, Potsdamer Platz and so much more. He was a wealth of historical information and brought with him a binder with additional pictures to further illustrate the stories he told. Of particular interest were Hilters' plans for Germania, his proposed capital of the world once he achived complete domination of the globe. We grabbed a quick lunch at Postdamer Platz and could really get a feel for the buzz of the city.
The next day we went to Sachsenhausen with David as our guide. Once again , he was a wealth of information.
Spending two days with David was worth every cent. It was so nice to be a small group of 4. We felt that we could ask any question and we learned so much more than we ever would have in a large tour group or even on our own with a reputable tour book. We left the city with a much better sense of Berlin past and present and are keen to return to such a vibrant city.
