“Ok standard, very central and cheap”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2013

We've stayed at this hotel for the sole purpose of visiting the ITB. We stayed one night.
The Upper Room Hotel is located on the two top floors of an old town building with high doors and ceilings in the public area. The rooms are located one floor above and are pretty much standard and were a bit disappointing taking the first impression into consideration. The room itself was ok, it had a comfortable bed, flatscreen tv, bathroom with shower etc.

The one fact that ut us off was a horrible smell in th corridors of the rooms. It almost smelled like a sewage pipeline broke or leaked. The smell was present all day the first day and faded away a bit in the morning after. There was no advice from the staff.

Breakfast was good with hot and cold items, muesli, cake, yoghurt etc.

The house in which the hotel is located has an elevator, however it is hardly or not suitable for wheelchair drivers and possibly families with small children.
Service was more or less ok. We did not expect the staff to go out of their way and it did not happen. Even though it was nice to be left alone for breakfast, it would possibly have been nice, if the waitress would have come at least once to clear the table of dirty plates.
The gentleman in the evenng shift (black hair, black beard) was ver friendly and gave a feeling of beeing a service provider.
There are many other hotels within 3, 4 and 5 star range and we will possibly pick a 4 star next time to see, if there are differences. Berlin was nice as we came right when it started snowing again and the whole town got a white cover over night.

We had 2 spacious rooms. One for two teenageboys and one for my wife and I. The carpet was old and the smell on the corridor was not allways nice, but the room vas nice, clean and with a lot of natural light. Breakfast was fine and it is very nice lokateded.
Not recomended for people with fisical disability.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The staff were friendly, the room was good and the breakfast choice was better than I expected for €40 per night in a City Centre hotel. The location is excellent, close to Zoo Station, KuDamm and a vibrant Christmas Market. I'd definitely recommend this hotel.

The location of this hotel is brilliant, a few minutes walk from the center of west Berlin. Breakfast very good and varied choice. Great price for the location. Downside is the spiral staircase, difficult with luggage and no kettle in rooms to make tea/coffee. Would stay again if in berlin.

We stayed at the Upper Room hotel for 5 nights.
It is an old fashioned hotel located on the 4th and 5th floor of a building. You'd have to climb the stairs from the building entrance to the elevator, which is under the main stairs, don't miss it! It only goes to the 4th floor, so if you have a little child or many luggage items, or whatever, think quiet before you choose this hotel. As for me, i always try to read some reviews and a hotel description before i book a hotel, so i was prepared to run the stairs. :)

I believe it is possible to request a room on the 4th floor when booking on the web or by phone.
As for the noise: we lived in room 115, its windows go to the inner yard, so it was quiet day and night. I used to spend my morning hours working in the room and nothing could disturb me.
I booked a standard twin room, so i got just what i'd expected. You can choose a comfort double, which is bigger, but i am not sure if it's a true 'double' or just a space-improved twin room. Room space is enough to keep 2 large luggage.

Pillows were a disaster. Though they're big enough to sleep, they're old and uncomfy.
Wi-fi connection was stable, but session is still running out sometimes. Anyway, it never bothered me while i was working. But guys on reception told us that some people are having troubles with connection on their smartphones and netbooks.
24-hour reception.

As for the service provided. 1) Cleaning ladies were all politeness, our room was always clean. I think they have a carpet problem during the winter time as it gets dirty very quickly. Just a couple of going-outs for a coffee down the street and back to the room, and the carpet is dirty again :( Anyway, the cleaning is worth the room price;
2) there was one guy on the reception, who was not very polite at first, but i never saw him again till the day of departure. Other guys and girls on reception and in the breakfast room were polite;
3) A little "Con" to the hotel: we had to ask for the room safe instructions as well as for the wi-fi passcodes, they did not give us any "tips" at the time of our arrival;

As for the breakfast buffet. A good value for money spent on B&B. Fair continental one: eggs, vegetables, yogurts, cheese, cornflakes, juice, sausages, etc. Worth it. But not for the coffee lovers as it's awful there.. But you can go out and have a good one in the nearest bakery just across the street.
Would definitely stay there again and i do recommend it.

Room Tip: 115 room's windows on the 4th floor (1st hotel floor) go to the inner yard, so it's quiet; t...

Stayed at this hotel for three nights. After lugging our suitcases up a long flight of stairs from the entrance then taking the lift and then more stairs to get into the hotel on the 4th floor of the building we were exhausted! Staff not very friendly. We were in a bedroom on the 4th floor facing the front, did not get any sleep, people outside the hotel argueing and fighting, sirens sounding there are several restaurants and bars in the same street which are open till late and the noise from them was very loud.Our friends were on the 5th floor and had to go upa a narrow spiral staircase which was not practical with suitcases.The room was very small with the double bed shoved up against the wall,stained carpets, but generally clean elsewhere. The buffet breakfast was very good with lots of choice.Hotel very well situated.

While I have to agree this hotel is good value for money and in a great place for easy access to u & s Bahn station's I also agree with some of the more negative reviews. Be aware if you book a standard Double room you'll actually get a twin, which wouldn't in itself be too inconvenient except the room was that small the beds had to be positioned at right angles to each other. It was however very clean and the beds/bed linen super comfy. Yes one of the reception staff was particularly unwelcoming but the rest of the staff particularly breakfast service were lovely. There is a lift up to reception but rooms on floors above are accessed via a spiral staircase - beware after a night enjoying the local brew -incidentally there is a great little bar right next door and a fab restaurant serving local dishes next to that - idea. Pros and Cons like most places but maybe more suited for the younger age as a lot of young large groups using the hotel on our trip.

Room Tip: Pay that little extra for the superior double - not standard!
