“Great place, very advised!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Firstly, the Grand Hostel is located near two tube stops (and one very good kebab place ;)). The hostel is very clean throughout and all the doors work with a personalised code, so no fear of losing room keys. The room was clean and comfortable and kept at a good temperature. Toilets were spotless and the showers were clean and private enough.

The bar has a happy hour between 4 and 6, perfect for a few 'pre evening' beers and all the staff were very chatty and friendly. If you speak to 'Morgan' behind the bar (South African chap), asking him to make a 'flaming senorita' shot for you and your friends. It's very tasty and involves a real bit of showmanship.

We didn't do it, but they offer free Pasta (and a glass of wine for €1) on wednesday nights, perfect for travellers on a budget to meet new people!

Very beautiful historical building. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hostel equips with high-tech code-lock. It is quite convenient and secure. There are many greens in the room, make the stay more lively.

Stayed for a few nights in one of the double rooms with bathroom. The staff were really fantastic and couldn't have been more helpful, they really created a welcoming atmosphere. All facilities were clean, tidy and infinitely better than many hotels I have stayed at, wifi was excellent too. The hostel is not directly in the centre of the city but it's worth using the public transport system (or hiring bikes in the warm weather) in the city anyway.

The thing that makes this hostel special, is their staff. The day we arrived, we were welcomed with coffee and tea, and a large map of Berlin, and we were asked what we wanted to see and got showned where we could find it. The staff was very helpful and provided something extra. The atmosphere in the hostel was really good, which also meant that we ended up in the hostel bar each evening with a lot of the other guests.
In addition, the rooms were nice, the bathrooms were clean, there was relatively quiet and in their café right next to, you could get a great brunch for 5.90 euros.
The only drawback may be that it is not in the center of the city, but then again, it takes 5 minutes to get to public transportation, which is easy and inexpensive in Berlin.
I can only recommend Grand Hostel!

Stayed for three nights in a 5-bed dorm. Nice location, just a few steps from the metro, friendly staff which is helpful without being intrusive, and clean rooms. What more can you ask for? Highly recommended!

Just returned from staying here. We chose the hostel after reading reviews on here and as usual we were not disappointed. Its more than a Hostel, we had a double room with en suite bathroom. Nice size room, pretty basic but comfortable, large wardrobe with lots of hangers, comfy bed with clean linen. The room came with towels and the bathroom had a hair dryer In it. We paid 300 euros for 4 nights, plus another 7 euros for linen hire, not sure if that was for the bed linen or the towels. The building is a big old converted house with high ceilings and lots of character. The staff were fantastic, really helpful and were eager to answer any questions we had about Berlin. There is no lift in the building so be prepared to walk up some stairs with your bags. The only "problem" we encountered was on our last night, a noisy bunch moved into one of the rooms along the corridor, who insisted on slamming doors, oh well if that's the most I have to complain about, how bad is that! There is a nice place for breakfast next door, but food is very readily available everywhere in Berlin. The hostel has a bar and all the usual facilities Free wifi etc. The hostel is really conveniently situated between 2 underground stations and took no more than 5-10 mins to get to the mitte (middle area of Berlin), We bought a 5 day transport ticket (Welcome card) at the tourist information counter at the airport, which cost 36 euros each, this gave unlimited travel on , tube, train and buses in zones A,B and C which is as much as you need. We flew into Shoenfeld airport which is on the same tube line as Mockenbruke the closest tube station to the hostel (although you do have to take a short bus ride the X7 from the airport to the tube station to start your journey). I would definitely recommend this hostel, oh yeah I am 56 years old by the way, hostels arnt just for kids :-)

I stayed here for 8 days and superglad I did. The hostel is superconvenient located. Very easy to reach from the airport (take any bus to Rudow, hop on the Ubahn till Mockernbrucke and check in :)) but also to reach different part of the city. Mitte,Friedrichshain,Kreuzberg,Charlotteburg etc were easely accesible.
Bathroom facilities were super!never crowded and always clean and the hot water was hot which is much needed when it is -8°C outside.
The bar of the hostel serves a nice mixture of drinks but moreso is a relaxing place to read a book or meet other travellers. I was on the top floor, so I don't know if other rooms suffer from noise, but my room was very quiet. I stayed in a 3bed shared room and the space was big.
If you turn right from the hostel, towards Mehringdam you find plenty of delicious deli's, restaurants and bars. A good suggestion is a deli named "Bagel and Coffee", or get yourself one of the best Kebabs in town at Gemuse Kebab (about 800meters away).
There is also a restaurant with the Hostel,Grandma's where you can also eat. I only had lunch there once but it was certainly tasty.
Thank for a great stay and will hopefully see you again this summer Grand Hostel!

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room if you don't mind staircases!
