We hadn't booked - always our problem - and the restaurant was full, but the owner very affably sat us down at the bar, served up a very decent Riesling and a glass of Berliner Kindl, and within twenty minutes, found us a good table. The menu is uncompromisingly German, plenty of large chunks of meat, but it is well cooked and presented, and on the night we went, they had a menu featuring fresh chanterelle mushrooms. The service was thoughful and prompt, the atmosphere is slightly on the formal side of relaxed, and the waiters appear to speak several languages. We decided to go again on our last night in Berlin, so I went back on that lunchtime to book: this time, there was no way; a very apologetic owner, but standing room only. Our loss - let it be your warning. The place is deservedly popular.
