the michelberger is a cool quirky hotel in a hip part of Berlin, with good connections to get around the other parts of the city. A lot of thought has gone into the style of the place and there is a huge amount of attention to detail in the visual aspects, especially the bar. This makes staying here a fun alternative to dull characterless chain hotels. The 'snug' room we had was very small but ok if you are planning to spend most of your time seeing Berlin. A small wardrobe or hanging rail would be useful though. The staff are generally helpful but there were a couple of instances where a traditional hotel might of offered more professionality. We asked one staff member to call us a taxi as we were going out to dinner. 5 minutes after it was supposed to have picked us up I asked at the desk and was told it was coming. 5 minutes later I asked them to check and then was told that they had forgotten to book it. this meant we were late for our table by about 15 mins. Not a huge deal but sightly irritating. The following morning I couldn't find my wallet in the room and after searching all over had to conclude it had been stolen from our room, whilst we were asleep. This seemed hard to believe, but shortly after we went to reception we found out that another guest In the room opposite had her phone stolen as well. the staff let us use their computer and phone to cancel my cards, but we didn't feel like what was a serious incident was treated with serious concern. After we reported it, it was never followed up by the staff and it was only after asking about calling the police that one member showed me how to report it online. my girlfriend did not feel safe in our room on our last night. I think part of the problem is that with large groups checking in and out the reception staff are very busy and can't offer the same service as you might find in an equivalent sized hotel in the western part of Berlin.
Its called a hotel and is priced similarly, but in some ways the michelberger is more like a grand upmarket hostel. Whilst this will be fine for many, especially those wishing to party, it might not be suitable for all.
