“Coolest crib in town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2012

Super original, super cool!
Good service, excellent breakfast (+reasonably priced), great decor and after a long day in Berlin you walk into a party every night in the lobby bar.

U-bahn station literally across the street! Nice restaurants within a walking distance.

By far the coolest hotel experience I´ve ever had. Booked another stay the day after departure...

And yes, this is for the urban hipsters, not for the golden oldies.

To begin - Hotel Michelberger has the best website I have ever encountered. It is itself almost worth inhabiting! The over-riding theme of chilled relaxed comfort is mediated through The Big Lebowski, which is played on a loop in the hotel corridors and your hotel room TV! Quotes from the man himself are everywhere including "New [--] has come to light" (writ large over the hotel entrance!) Im far to uptight to find el duderino comic - I constantly suppress the urge to tell him: get dressed, forget about the rug that ties everything together, and please oh please, for the love of reason, get a job. The clientele of the Michelberger inspired the same urge - at 38 years of age I am no longer interested in seeming cool - and it grated a bit to see "the youth of today" so hilariously and slavishly on-trend with their bum crack exposing skinny jeans, heavage, post-bed hair, dreadlocks, an every-growing love affair with tats and general louche carry-on while on their MacBooks (I confess I write this review using one!) just being so effortlessly cool and indifferent - what ever happened to reading Tolstoy in public during your 20s and thinking that was the coolest thing, if privately feeling it was slightly torturous stuff. I tried to slouch horizontally on the sofas (made of steel gabions stuffed with books - because maybe the youth of today no longer read books - so they may as well be used as ballast and stuffing in sofas) as my fellow guests did - but longed for something rigid and upright. I longed to think I was down-with-it, but realized that this was no longer the case. This my friends is the place to go when you are approaching 40 for the realization to be thrust upon you that you are in fact getting on.
Now, notwithstanding the above struggle with age and disconnect, the Michelberger was a decent stay. A converted warehouse building, the decor was perfect pitch of the unconventional, the manicured and the shabby, the lost and the found (incidentally this describes the clientele too). The bedrooms have a mezzanine sleeping area with soccer goal netting enclosing the space and a floor-to-ceiling height low enough that you could only crawl - a refined bunk for all the world. The steps up to it are narrow and steep and not for the over-30s and probably not for anyone with may have had a few drinks to many. I, in the end, opted for the bed/sofa on the ground floor of the room. An enormous window overlooks the train station - which was interesting. The bedroom temperature was equatorial to the point of discomfort - so I had to keep the window open all day in order to sleep at night - and I understand it is worse during the summer. Breakfast is EURO11 and in a neighboring restaurant. It was pretty good at the price.
The hotel sets itself up as unconventional and different, which at first glance it is. But looking back on it, I would now sat that is actually rather conventional and not so different. A far more unusual and interesting hotel experience in my view, is somewhere like Mama Shelter in Paris. Quirky it is - but not really any different to any other hotel - for all its alternative shtick, it is still a hotel, with standardized rooms, long windowless corridors, lifts, kitchens, reception desk, credit card machines, breakfast as extra - but with the best hotel website I've ever come across. Basically you exchange money for clean accommodation and food. Would I stay there again? Hmm probably, but I will look around first.

We stayed in the Michelberger for 7 days and had a great time. The room was small but cosy and clean, just what we wanted. Staff was very friendly and the location was perfect with the U & S bahn in front of the hotel. Great overall atmosphere! Would definitely recommend this hotel to friends & family.

Stayed here 13th to 15th Jan to celebrate my birthday! Rooms are so stylish and cosy i stayed in a nice and spacious loft room with my friend. I would highly recommend this hotel along with the alternative walking tour which picks you up at the hotel. Ben who is the guide is very well informed on Berlin and shows you a side of it which I just would not have seen had i explored it myself during the time I was there. I hope to come back in the summer!

Stayed here from 30 th dec till 2nd jan for my boyfriends xmas present, we stayed in a cozy room with a sexy shower! Brilliant to watch your partner having a shower from your bed! Really quirky room with lots of character just like the rest of the hotel! The 1st night we had a 5 course meal which was lovely home cooked food very generous portions! Loved the whole vibe off the hotel from the vintage cases and cuckoo clocks in reception, too the classic soul music played by the dj! All staff spoke brilliant english two members of staff that were very helpful were inga and phillip! Any problems see these guys on reception they couldn't be more helpful! Will defineatly coming back see you all soon :)

The Michelberger is a superb mixture of whackiness, unusual rooms, relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and slick service. Pretty well everything has been really well thought through, and our large party (17 to 55 years old) were all thrilled. The rooms are unusual, inspiring and very comfortable: the setting huge fun; the seating area and bar superb; and the location terrific for walking, S-bahn and U-bahn. Everyone should swim at the Badeschiff (15 minutes away). Wi-fi is excellent. Our only regret was a slightly expensive breakfast: otherwise, the perfect place to stay.

I recently spent three nights at the Michelberger while visiting Berlin for the first time with a friend. I absolutely loved Berlin and enjoyed my stay at the Michelberger. I'd definitely return. The common areas created a casual and friendly atmosphere, the kind of place you'd happily hang out in with friends. Our quick lunch of goulash and hot pretzels at the hotel's restaurant was great. Our room was smartly designed, and I liked it, though it may not be for everyone (hence the "Average" rating). I believe we stayed in a loft for two. My friend slept on the convertible sofa downstairs and I slept in the loft area upstairs. My bed was *super* comfy but would not be easy to get to if someone has any mobility issues; plus, once up there it's impossible to stand upright. The bathroom was tiny. While the space was well designed, the shower area was darker than I would've liked. The hotel itself is well located; it's near several public transport options and is a short walk to the Berlin Wall's East Side Gallery.

Overally, this is a great place for anyone young or young at heart.
