Neighborhood: Prenzlauer Berg
Description: Undoubtedly the city’s most sophisticated Indian restaurant, Meena Kumari is nestled beneath the colourful towering buildings of the imposing Lychener Strasse. A glass frontage gives way to fresh, white walls, comfortable cream banquettes and colourful artworks – a great talking point whether you pop in for after work drinks or a lingering romantic meal. Towards the back of the restaurant a deep red enclave, almost hidden behind a huge image of the beautiful Indian actress after which the restaurant is named, provides a more intimate, dimly lit setting where couples enjoy each others company and small groups of friends gossip over wine. The unusual, Indian style dishes which populate a short and sweet menu upon which the large platters of appetisers are particularly popular for sharing.

“A good Indian meal”
Reviewed May 18, 2012

In Prenzlauer Berg, unpretentious Indian named for a star crossed film starlet whose picture dominates the decor. But otherwise, the decor is low key. Excellent menu, enjoyed my lamb josht. Open to the street, nice room. A good value for the money.

“Very good Indian food”
Reviewed March 30, 2012

As a regular traveller in India, I was looking for an Indian restaurant in Berlin.
Someone recommended me Meena Kumari. We went there with the two of us. The area has many Indian restaurants and we quickly found it. The interior is warm, simple and welcoming. The service is kind and not too jovial. On the menu it mentions that the food is prepared according to the slow food method, so that preparation time may be longer. It proved to be cooked very well indeed. The dishes we ordered were delicious and lavish. I could not eat all and asked to pack up the rest for me to take home, which they immediately understood and prepared accordingly. All in all I would recommend anyone to go and eat a great Indian meal in this place. You will not regret it.

“Overrated, overpriced and very unpolite service.”
Reviewed July 30, 2011

Main dish made of chicken - and rather hard to find the three little pieces of chicken under a mountain of overooked rice. Even if there was not so much people we were served after half an hour, and when we finished eating we would have like3d to have one more drink, but the waiter impatient to get us out of there. It's a pity because the place itself is quite nice and fancy.
