Leonardo Hotel Berlin

Reviewed August 14, 2013 via mobile

Hotel Leonardo is right outside Bismarckstraße U-Bahn station, which has two lines to take you - in about 15 minutes - to the main centre of Berlin, now located just to the East of the Brandenburg Gate.

We paid about £40 per night for a twin, which was a brilliant price for the location and quality of the accommodation.

Our room was quite large, with lots of natural light from enormous floor to ceiling windows. It also had individually controlled air conditioning for the room, which was both quiet and effective (an unusual combination). The bathroom was good, with a great shower, though no bath in our room at least. There are tea/coffee making facilities but no fridge or minibar (not a big loss).

The reception area is very modern and welcoming, and could easily fit in to a much more expensive place. There is rather an insipid bar down there that didn't seem very well used, and when we returned late at night wanting a nightcap it had already closed. However the helpful staff pointed us to another late pub (very quiet but friendly) just a couple of minutes away.

Likewise there is a bakery just opposite so unless you love big hotel buffets, there's really no need to opt for breakfast in the hotel. A nice roll and a cup of tea at the bakery is about €3,50.

If you are staying at this hotel, it is worth trying to fly into Tegel rather than Schönefeld, since it is so much nearer: a short bus/tube journey or only €12 in a taxi. (Besides Tegel is a smaller, nicer airport and BA flights there from Heathrow Terminal 5 are often only marginally more expensive than Easyjet's offerings or the same price once you take into account baggage allowances.)

Biggest downside of this place, if searching around for one, was that Wifi was outrageously expensive at nearly €6 an hour or €12 a day. But we did without it. There are free Internet terminals in reception.

If I return to Berlin and want to stay somewhere comfortable, but not really super swanky, I will probably go back to this hotel. I recommend it.

We stayed at this hotel as a part of a group booking .We had stayed at a Leonardo property in Munich and were quite pleased with it . The location of this hotel in Berlin is just fantastic . The U Bahn is just outside around the corner . There are pharmacies , food joints , supermarkets etc all around the place . The street is absolutely bustling till about 7 PM when all shops are open . The reception is huge and has a small bar on the right .
The biggest problem was the service . The reception staff were rude and abrupt . In the time that I stayed here , not once did they address any of my queries with a smile. Yes , they seemed to be busy as the hotel constantly seemed to have large groups arriving but that surely is no excuse for being surly . Even if they were doing nothing , requests were constantly met with - "we are very busy ". "we do not have time for this ". On one occasion , I was leaving the hotel and suddenly remembered my laundry . When i queried , the reception staff promptly wanted to hand over my laundry to me . I informed them that I was going out and requested if it could be sent over to my room . To which the reply was - "we are very busy right now". I looked around . There were no new check ins .. No one else asking for their attention . I politely told the lady that she could send it when she was less busy and at her convenience . To which , there was just a curt nod .. On my return, i found the laundry right there . No attempt had been made to deliver the laundry to my room .
This was just one instance .. There is no room service too . Internet is not free and is charged at very high rates . While this was true of the Leonardo hotel at Munich too , the service or rather lack of it just makes me point out more disadvantages .
In short , if u are looking for a good location and nothing else - this is the place . Don't expect service and u will not be disappointed . The hotel is very busy and is quite safe . Seems to be popular with group bookings

Our reservation did not offer breakfast and when we made our reservation we asked for a double bed and it was confirmed by the hotel via email. But when we arrived the room was nothing similar to the pictures, very small, dirty and with only one single bed and a sofa bed. When we asked to change they told us that the hotel was full and it would only be possible on the next day. And they didn't even offer us a discount to be in a very inferior room that the one we had paid for.

We stayed at Leonardo Hotel Berlin in vacation in July 2013. I would not recommend it.
It is quite a long way from the subway, a 15 min walk along a dreary street of old East Berlin, packed with horrible soviet-style huge buildings. The staff are not so kind, except for the woman at the tourist info desk, she was of big help in hiring the bicycles (12€/day) and reserving the tickets for the MuseumInsel. This meant skipping a two hour queue to see Nefertiti and all the rest.
Breakfast is average, the room also average but one of the beds was uncomfortable, no italian channel availabe on tv, no bidet (italian readers).
But what really annoyed me was having to pay 6€/hour to be connected to a wifi, and it was slow and kept going off. You cannot call a hotel Leonardo and be so old fashioned!
For a very good pizza or pasta go to pizzeria Fontana delle Fiabe, direction opposite to Alexanderplatz. Bikes are an excellent opportunity to get to know the city, dedicated lanes are everywhere!

i can recommend this highly - fantastic breakfast buffet, decent spa - except thta the larger rooms can be really weird - the shower/tub are literally in your bedroom - oddly shaped. didn¨t enjoy that one bit.

Room Tip: avoid tehe 'generous' doubles with the shower right next t your bed - open style

Lovely hotel, located near the metro station, close to the center. Breakfast is expensive, but around a few shops and pleasant cafes.
Paid WI-FI online at a price more than 10 euros per day, this is some nonsense.
Highly recommend for trips to Berlin
