Berlin is a funky interesting cool place - for young and old - and there is no better affordable accommodation that reflects it than the Circus in East Berlin. There is a hostel, a hotel and short stay apartments, all within walking distance of each other, that cater for all types of travellers. Never have I stayed in a place (the hotel) where the staff and facilities were so generous and thoughtful. From the laid-back "no rush to pay" attitude, to the organic breakfasts and ipods loaded with fabulous music, the place was divine. The rooms are furnished individually with the best beds and linen. The place even has a music director who arranges for local artists to perform on selected Friday nights. Circus is situated right on the underground train line for easy connections to the city and the staff are only too happy to advise of places to go - either by talking to them, or browsing the "staff favourite" newsletter. I cannot wait to return. Don't agonize about choosing anywhere else - book the Circus now.

We stayed at Circus hotel for two days. from the start, we found the hotel staff professional and extremely helpful and friendly. Added to helpful staff are things like free WiFi, free loan of a DVD player and various other thoughtful additions that made this a very pleasurable stay.

The rooms are extremely comfortable, excptionally clean and very well maintained. En-suite bathrooms are of a similarly high standards.

The buffet breakfast was also of a very high standard. The Germans have a particular style of muesli which is totally delicious and very satisfying. Schinken and bread rolls are another treat not to be missed.

Full marks to the team at Circus Hotel.

I travel a lot for work so am relatively picky about hotels but this is one of the best I have ever stayed in. We stayed for three nights for a weekend break. the hotel is clean, friendly and local for Alexanderplatz and the U-bahn. Additionally, the decor is tasteful and chic, and the bar/restaurant cool and relaxed. However, it is the little service extras that really make the place what it is. As well as free wifi throughout the hotel, there are iPads and iPods in the bar pre-loaded with stuff about Berlin culture. You can rent bikes, electronic bikes and Segways. There is a cute little roof terrace with an "honesty bar". The staff can't do enough to help you find what you want to do. The owners have been very respectful of the history of the building and it is reflected throughout. For the money, I would recommend it to anyone.

I stayed in the 3 room apartment within the hotel and really felt at home here. The apartment was full of lovely design features, high quality fixtures, very well maintained, spotlessly clean, and had a fun and vibrant presentation. It was surprisingly spacious and even had two toilets. This was an ideal family (of 4) home for our stay - with an emphasis on trendy and eco conscious design.

But be warned the apartment we stayed in had no air conditioning as this does not really fit into their eco mindset. Now on hot days this might mean you get quite warm. Standing fans are supplied and there are plentiful windows. Opening a window does however let the city noise into your room - even on the top floor - which may or may not be ok for you. It didn't affect our stay - but it might yours.

The rest of the small hotel was equally well presented with all hallways and other area's being beautifully maintained. The hotel makes a real effort to make sure they use local food and provide a small number of more traditional daytime/evening menu options - but the meals are wonderfully prepared and presented and taste just as good. Breakfast is simple but again the focus is on taste and quality so you will either like it or not - worth checking before you buy as there are other options locally if not. Once more the principle is if you like what they serve it is great food.

Maybe one of the great parts of this hotel is the fact that the staff on reception are all amazingly helpful and very warm/friendly so any advice and/or problem is quickly sorted - in pretty much any language. The location is also a major plus being just a few steps - possibly 10 metres from an exit from the Rosenthaler Platz Tube stop and travel to/from couldn't be easier.

A small point to note just for completeness is that there web site also includes a video on how to get to the hotel from various locations. I used it and found it very simple to follow - using the train/tube from the airport - total journey time being less than 1 hour including walking/waiting/train travel. A cool feature that - especially if the younger ones want to help!!!

So in summary. A very cool, relaxed style of small hotel with 4 star luxury. We all loved it - just like Berlin.

We stayed in this hotel for three nights in a double with en suite. The room was clean and trendy. The bathroom was spacious and the shower head was amazing. The staff were very helpful and spoke fluent English. We were able to get discounted daily public transport passes from reception. The hotel is in a very trendy area near some very nice shops and restaurants, particularly in Alte Schonhauserstrasse. The instructions provided on the website to get to the hotel from the Hauptbahnof were clear and easy to follow. The entrance to the Rosenthaler platz subway station was 20 metres from the front door. Very good value with free WiFi in the room, although breakfast was not included.

Just got back from a four night stay at the Circus Hotel and I can attest that it is number 1 for a reason! The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating, the location can't be beat (there is U and a tram right next to the hotel), and they offer a pletheroa of amenities. Although we didn't take advantage of most of them you can rent a mini laptop, use a cell phone, rent segways, bikes, and more! They also have free wifi which is always a plus (I get so aggravated when $200+ hotels make you pay for it!). We did use their metro cards, for 4.50 euros a day you have unlimited access to Berlin's public transportation, can't beat that! Just make sure you ask for that the night before you want to use it or early in the morning because they have a limited number.

Though the breakfast buffet was a bit pricey we did eat at the hotel two mornings for convenience and they do have an excellent selection. The other two mornings we ate at a bagel shop right across the street which is great if you need something on the go. We also had dessert and wine at the restaurant and that was also excellent, the dinner menu looked great but we had already eaten.

The room was very cool in it's decor, the bathroom was very large, the only downfall is the bedroom could be a bit larger. There is a safe and plenty of outlets around the room.

Berlin is a lovely city, I hope to be back soon and when I return I will definitely pick the Circus Hotel again!

Belatedly writing a review from our stay here in April 2010( the review dates don't go back that far!) We were supposed to go out one weekend but our flights were cancelled due to the volcanic ash - they were incredibly good about cancelling and rebooking our room when we barely knew if or when we would make it. We had a junior suite - excellent value for €100 per night. It was overlooking the central courtyard and very quiet - funky decor! The staff were fantastic - so helpful - it was busy when we arrived and our room was not ready but they kept our bags for a few hours and the same when we checked out. Fantastic location - right by the U-Bahn but only 7-8 minutes walk to Alexanderplatz and Hackescher Markt. We paid the extra for breakfast each morning but thought it very good value - a wonderful array including all the different breads. We absolutely loved Berlin - very under-rated as a weekend destination.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the junior suites - still excellent value. Try to get a room overlooking their inn...
