Select Hotel Berlin Gendarmenmarkt
Ranked #148 of 633 Hotels in Berlin

There were good and bad reviews about this hotel so my wife and I were a little apprehensive about it. We were delighted with our 7 night stay. The hotel is within a few minutes walk to all the landmarks and just around the corner from Checkpoint Charlie and the beautiful Gendarmenmarkt. The hotel staff were very helpful especially Niels? who phoned around for a dentist when I had a tooth problem and spoke to the taxi driver with directions on how to get there. There is a supermarket around the corner for any wine or beer needs and is open until late. The breakfast had been criticised by other reviewers but I don't know what they expect! Fresh scrambled or boiled eggs, bacon, sausages etc. every morning and a good selection of cereals, cold meats and cheeses. What more could you ask for? Our room at the front of the hotel was quite noisy with the window open but I'd rather have that than look out on to a fairly drab courtyard at the back. All i all I would certainly go back to this hotel and would recommend it for a comfortable and central Berlin hotel.

Room Tip: If you have a problem with street noise at night ask for a room at the back or keep the windows clos...

Our first experience with lastminute.com's "Secret Hotels", we paid £68 per night for 4 nights, for a double room. On booking, we had requested a room facing the inner courtyard, which wasn't forthcoming, but as it happens, we didn't suffer from noise at all, being on the 4th floor. Perhaps in summer it might be a problem if you open the windows, but there was aircon, which we didn't need, it being October.

The hotel is located in Mitte district, which is very convenient for the main sites, and also just a few minutes from Stadtmitte U-Bahn. Round the corner is a 24/7 supermarket, with cafe, (closed on public holidays, though !) and a Leckerback cafe, if you don't fancy paying 14 euros for breakfast. Between the 2 there is also a chemist, and for chocolate fans, Fassbender & Rausch have the most amazing shop and tea rooms just along the street.

The room was good - the bathroom was separate, and everything worked well. Hairdryer provided, and basic toiletries, and the cupboard had shoe cleaner and shoe horn. There is also a very efficient safe - free, unlike many others I've seen, and a fridge with mini-bar, very useful for keeping your own drinks cool (purchased from aforementioned supermarket !)
Internet cable in the room, but not much use for tablets, which you could connect on the first floor or in the lobby, or use the hotel's computer. As previously posted, they should make this clear on their website. Bed very comfortable, unless you like a soft one. Couple of chairs and a table were handy, too.

Reception staff very friendly, and spoke fluent English, although were also prepared to let you stumble through queries in German. Very knowledgeable, and provided maps without being asked. Although no kettle in the room, I found them quite willing to give you a free cup of hot water from the bar to take upstairs, if you've got your own teabags.

Only one lift, and it was always very slow - had a good security system, though, as you had to use your room card to get it to work. Lots of information leaflets and discount cards just beside it on the ground floor.

Would definitely recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for one on a higher floor (there are 6) to be away from street noise, or if possible facing the...

Second stay here and it was excellent. Our double room was really nice and clean and the staff here are really friendly. Josina (apologies if I spelt it wrong) stood out as she helped us with lots of different things. The hotel is in a great area of town, close to nice restaurants and the chocolate cafe/shop. I really recommend this hotel and look forward to visiting again.

I enjoyed my stay here. Staff were very helpful and the location was wonderful. I had booked months in advance and paid 120 for a single. Walk-ins were quoted 99 for a double, which was a little aggravating, but I guess it is the price for having the assurance of a reservation on a busy weekend. Over-all, I recommend this hotel.

We stayed here in September for 4 nights. We booked it on lastminute.com through the "secret hotels" and paid just £50 a night. From reading other reviews I thought that as we had paid so little we would have a small room, but our room was large, with a sofa and a chair, and separate bathroom (room 303). We found the staff friendly, the room spotless and the hotel quiet. The hotel is in a good location close to a u bahn station and walking distance from many attractions. There's a supermarket next door for any additional supplies.

The negatives- Breakfast cost €14 per person which seemed expensive, we chose to eat in the many nearby cafes instead.
The other negative was lack of WiFi in rooms, but we can live without.

For the price, we found this excellent value.

We stayed here over the marathon weekend, the staff were very polite and extremely helpful, our room was very small and narrow, bizarrely our shower was actually in the room with us, this wasn't too much of a problem, it was quirky, but it was a good job i was with my husband and not sharing with a friend, not sure i would be too happy having absolutely no privacy!

There was a lot of noise during the evening/night time, it isn't a very quiet hotel you can hear other guests above and next too us, unfortunately we had a young family next too us and the child was crying a lot.

The hotel is in a good location with some really nice bars and restaurants in walking distance. We had breakfast on one morning, it was nice and fresh with lots of choice, not sure it was worth 14 euros each but it is a hotel!

I wouldn't go back purely as the room was small and the hotel was very noisy, also we booked this hotel as the website clearly states free wifi however what that means is reality is you get free wifi in the room if you connect your laptop, but only get free wifi on your phone in the public areas, which was rather annoying and should be clearly stated on the website.

We stayed for 7 nights, 2 couple ages 50+
The hotel is located conveniently in the center. lots of restaurants and cafes in the area
Perfectly clean and modern
However, do not expect a 4* hotel. The reception team is efficient and helpful, fluently in English and always welcoming
However, rooms are small, Internet is not easy to operate (No wifi in the rooms). Amenities are very limited, Lobby is tiny and crowded (remember? no wifi in therooms)
We do recommend it bu expect a 3* level. Nothing more

Room Tip: Once you check in, ask to be removed to a larger room.
