Stayed three nites in early July. Location very convenient to two subway stops, major bus lines and the extraordinary KaDeWe department store. The staff were uniformly pleasant and helpful, both with accommodations and with general Berlin information. Breakfast was hearty, and at the $10 pre-pay rate, a real bargain. Dinner at the restaurant was so good that we were disappointed when the waiter mentioned it would soon close in evenings for lack of business. The genuinely gay-positive atmosphere is also a big plus -- and the free internet points made a big difference.

That said, it's also true that the hotel is classic example of design over function. The rooms and corridors are maddening mazes of black walls at odd angles with unexpected turns, mirrors and odd lights, as if we were not renting a hotel room but the back room of an after-hours nightclub. In our jr suite, the bathroom, shower and sink were in area separated from bed by strange see-through wall; the access point on either side was curved mirrored walls (think circus Fun House) that I literally walked into twice -- in daylight. The high-tech chrome shower was so confusing that, with some embarrassment, we had to ask for help from the front desk to adjust the water (a need that has surely never surfaced in 30 years of travels). The fact that the desk clerk had trouble, too, and could only adjust the water after wrapping a towel around one of the knobs was small consolation. Someone was a little too full of himself when he designed these rooms. The hotel is great in many ways, but the maddening design features mean guests spend too much energy trying to navigate its basic functions.

At the Axel Hotel you get style without the attitude. The pros include: (1) friendly and helpful staff; (2) stylish (albeit small) rooms with good lighting and great showers; (3) nice spa area , (4) free and reliable internet (officially, they charge for it, but they provided us with complimentary internet for the four days that they were there), and (5) a very fair price. The minuses: (1) minimal storage - two drawers and four hangers, and (2) inadequate airconditioning, which required us to keep the windows open at night notwithstanding the noise on the street below.

Room tip: Ask for rooms with shower (instead of bath) and on the back side.

I recently returned from a trip to Berlin and a stay at the Axel Hotel. I thoroughly enjoyed the central location from which the majority of bars and clubs in Berlin's gay commuinty are only few minutes walking distance from the hotel's front door. The neighbourhood is a tree filled section of the city and across the street in the next "platz" is the subway, and Berlin's finest Department Store "KaDeWe" (keep your eye out for US celebrities shopping in the stores vast floors). The hotel was great value for the money. I stayed in a junior suite (Buenos Aires suite) that was large, had an excellent views from it's 5 floor perch, and a great bathroom with large jazcuzzi tub and seperate toilet area with a large seperate glass shower. Staff were very gracious and helpful in offering maps, club and sight seeing tips etc. The restaurant on the main floor offered a good but nothing special bfast in the morning that "is not included" in your room rate. This hotel is "hetero" friendly, but make no mistake about it....they are targeting the LGBT community and the vast majority of guests were gay. The top floor of the hotel housed a spa area with good wieghts and equipment, a sauna (too hot), steam room (too cold) and outdoor jacuzzi overlooking the city (way too cold water temperature). The area was often strewn with used towels and sometimes garbage, the hotel should have staff checking and cleaning the area hourly. Also the hotel provides a computer with internet access on floor 2 and 3 but not 4 and 5. This means that often you are waiting or can not access the computer. I would recommend that the hotel include work stations on the other two floors as well. While I did not get charged for wirless internet in my room, the hotel literature says there is a charge. Perhaps they stopped actually charging as the system is often "overloaded" and you can't log on unless its very early in the morning or late at night. I can not understand how a city the size of Berlin and a hotel in the heart of that city can not offer wirless access free of charge that works properly. Also you must pay to watch TV. Again I found this odd, movies I understand being charged for for regular television? Be prepared their King size beds are simply two standard beds taped by the legs together. This means that unless you sleep on either side of the bed you slip in the crack that runs down the middle. Again in a country like Germany and a city the size of Berlin do they not manufacture King size beds? Would I stay there again? Absolutely, but in hopes that the spa area, wirless service and bed issue be attended to. Overall it is a stylish boutique hotel that offers great value for the money in Berlin.

Room tip: If you want a junior suite ask for the Buenos Aires suite on the 5th floor.

Dear JMCToronto, thank you so much for your review here on Tripadvisor. I m so happy that you had a good time with us and we are glad to win you already as a regular guest. For your suggestion. The WI-FI is already free since the 01.07.2011 and we hope to make our guest more happier with this decision. We check the SPA on a regular base, maybe you had a day where it was totaly busy and also in the other outlets that we had a small delay. Anyway, thanks again and we are looking forward to welcome you again in the Axel Berlin. Kind regards, Oliver Boehme, General Manager, Axel Hotel Berlin

We stayed at Axel hotel for our second time and when we arrived they upgraded us to a superiour room for free, so we could get a room at arrival. Excellent service from the receptionist.

The room was nice, but even though the hotel is quite new it allready is not maintaned to a high standard. The door between the toilet and the open bathroom could not close / did not work.

We did not mention it as a complaint because of the free upgrade. The rooms lacks in general space for clothes, shoes etc. and things like an iron and ironing board.

Else the room is quite good and nicely decorated.

The breakfast was okay to the price but nothing special and not what you normally get at a 4 star hotel.

The spa area is nice but sometimes it gets to sexualised. That made us stay away from the nice spa area, as it is not relaxing to be in a spa where people are very directly aproaching people. If that is what the hotel wants then it is fine, but then it is not a hetero friendly hotel as it advertise to be. Even I who is gay found it a bit to much. The spa would have got 5 if it was more "family" friendly.

The staff at the hotel are very friendly and the hotel is in overall quiet nice. There was a nice warm up party to the CSD parade.

The things above mentioned and the value for the price makes us only give it an average score. You can get 4-5 star hotels in Berlin for same price or cheaper.

Thanks for a nice stay but next time we will probebly use another hotel.

Dear Vendelbo, thank you so much for your comment here on Tripadvisor. It is always important to get a feedback and suggestions from our guest. I m happy that you had more less a good with us so far. I m sorry that you had a problem with your door in the bathroom. Next time please inform us. Just because you got an upgrade is not an excuse that there has to be a problem in the room.We are Heterofriendly thats right but first of all we are a Gay Hotel Chain. I can´T control what happend in the SPA, specially when you said that you are here during the Gaypride i knew already that during that time we had 98% gay people in the Hotel who just came to Berlin to Celebrate the Pride. If you are gay like you said you know like me how the Community like to celebrate.Anyway, thanks for to be our guest and it would be nice to welcome you again in the Hotel just to show that it is not always so "crazy" like during the Gaypride.Kind regards, Oliver Boehme, General Manager, Axel Hotel Berlin

We chose this hotel because of its location and its awesome design. It turned out to be a great hotel for couples, although I'd issue a warning for people planning to share a room with someone they're not in a relationship with. The design of the showers makes it impossible to shower without any other person in the room watching which could potentially be beyond awkward.

The staff was very friendly. Breakfast cost 13€ and was good, though nothing fancy. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants in the surrounding area that also serve breakfast, so there's lots to choose from.

Dear Elvine78, thank you so much for your comment here on Tripadvisor. I m happy that you had a good time with us. You are right we are not a Businesshotel and the rooms are with a really open. Our Main guest are for 90% couples or Singleperson and we are happy with oour concept. I think there are a lot of other Hotels where Businesspeople can stay but in the same time there are not so romantic and sexy for couples like the Axel Berlin. I really hope to welcoming you soon again in the Axel Berlin. Kind regards, Oliver Boehme, General Manager, Axel Hotel Berlin
