“Great stay, nice location”
Reviewed September 29, 2010

Haven't heard of the name before, and I was curious. Website was nicely designed, the rooms look trendy. A few minutes later, my room was booked.
The hotel is conveniently located: away from the main road (quiet), and central ( 5min from GendarmPlatz and from the Dome).
Room was nicely fitted (loved the bed and the chair): no tacky furniture from some boring US hotel chain.
Room size is fine, well sufficient for two persons. Anyway, Berlin has so much to offer, that the room is only for resting and getting a clean :-)
Bed comfy and I had a good night sleep: it is very quiet.
Internet is free ("high" speed comes with a fee) and it was sufficient to work (VPN).
Staff was really friendly and even when a large queue was formed at the check in, smile and courtesy didn't leave.
Do I recommend this hotel: yes, I do. I had a great and pleasant stay, and I will consider it for my next trip.

We made and paid a reservation (lastminute.com) 2 months in advance for 1 night in Berlin. When we arrived, they told us at the front desk that our reservation was cancelled and they had decided to made us a reservation in other hotel (not as good located as this one). Not a message was recived from them neither from lastminute.com. Next stay in Berlin, we surely choose another hotel.

I don't think that this deserves 4* status. Good location, rooms are clean but sparse i.e. not cosy or comfortable. Staff are polite but distant and I definitely would not recommend the restaurant for evening meals. Nice and quiet for business travellers and families.

To whom it may concern,
thank you very much for having chosen the ARCOTEL John F for your recent stay in Berlin and taking the time to share your experience on Tripadvisor.

We strive very hard to continually provide our guests with the highest levels of service and product, however on this occasion it is clear that we most regrettably fell short in offering a tempting dinner option.
In order to optimize our performance we would be very grateful if you would spare a moment of your time again and share a detailed feedback concerning the restaurant by sending a few lines to our hotel email: johnf@arcotelhotels.com which will enable us to perform even better in the futuer.

With very kind regards
The Team of ARCOTEL John F

We stayed here for 4 nights and it is in a great location to explore Berlin. It is one block south of Unter den Linden and just two blocks from Museum Island. The staff are efficient, friendly and helpful. We don't speak German, but they all spoke excellent English and made us feel welcome and comfortable. The room was comfortable and clean. The buffet breakfast (included in our rate) was extensive and tasty. Free access to the internet in the business center off the lobby was a plus. It is a relatively new hotel and not very busy when we were there.

We arrived a few hours before check in but our room was already prepared. The lifts are only useable if you have a room key. This made us feel very safe as soon we got there. Its only 5 miles from Tegal airport and cost around 20 euros in taxi.

We were greeted by friendly staff and our room was extremely clean. The only negative about the room was that two beds were put together to form a big bed which was a little awkward. The beds were very comfy though. The view from our room was very nice. We were situated on 4th floor and could see Friedrichwerdische Kirche ( church) It is a 5 minute walk from Under Den Linden which is where most bus routes are and a 15-20 minute walk to Brandenburger Tor. The area is currently undergoing some work but you do not get disturbed by any of this. There was a big flatscreen tv but mosly german channels, but there is a dvd player. If you bring something to watch yourself it is great.

Breakfast was also great, with a buffet style theme, from sausage, bacon, eggs and ham. It caters for all needs. The later you go own the busier it gets. The bar is open for drinks and bar snacks aswell as having an in room menu. The restaurant is also open except for Sundays. As others have said the prices do seem expensive however everywhere you eat in berlin it is expensive. 10 euros for a burger at most restaurants.

It is situated in a quiet part of berlin but many places to eat around the hotel and close to many tourist attractions.

Once checking out you can leave your bags while you go out sight-seeing. They also arranged for a taxi to take us back to the airport. We didn't have to arrange anything except pay the taxi.

If eating out i would recommend Andy's bar and dinner which did some excellent food.

The hotel is also on a bus route 147. You can purchase day ticket for 6.10 euros and get on and off as many buses that day in are A and B. The best bus route are 100 and 200 which take you to most attractions. This is on Unter Den Linden. It is also a few minutes from U-bahn but we used the buses.

This was our second stay at the Arcotel John F. The first time we were greeted by the bell boy, personally escorted to our room, with detailed explanations of where all the amenities were. The second time we were checked in within about 30 seconds of arrival, however, it was to a handicapped room (meaning shower had no separation to toilet and sink) and we got a room with two twin beds instead of a king as we had requested. When we went back down to request another room, the receptionist angrily hacked into her computer to look for another room and told us that it's normal to get two twin beds and that they can get someone to push them together. It wasn't that she said that, but how she said it that made me put the service at only two stars. Clearly there has been a downgrade in staff training since the last time we stayed there.

The rooms are clean enough, and the hotel itself is very quiet. The location however, is really unbeatable. It is just a few steps away from the Gendarmenmarkt, with loads of incredible restaurants, and a few more steps away is Friedrichstrasse, one of the biggest shopping streets in Berlin. On the opposite side is Humbolt University and the Museum Island. Needless to say, if you are keen on exploring east Berlin, this is the place to stay. Also, they often have fairly good promotional rates (we got 2 nights for about 150 Euros)

We were looking for a fairly short stay in Berlin to cater for the Pearl Jam concert and were focussed on a more modern hotel. The Arcotel John F exceeded our expectations on a number of fronts.
Firstly the negative aspects included, no iron/board in the room (however these can be requested through reception). My best advice would be to seek an iron and board during check in if required. Now normally German engineering is so meticulous it is ridiculous, however the shower without a screen and design threw water all over the bathroom when it hits the occupant in the shower. Just ensure you put plenty of towels down before embarking inside. Other than that the shower is superb!

The room is ultra modern, ultra clean and has a small kitchenette although there are no pots and pans in the room. There is a small food store down the road for your supplies (leave via the side exit for easy access) and it is of the gourmet variety. Flat screen TV's are great, the bed super comfortable and the whole "vibe" of the room matches the city. The rooms offer temperature control which I feel is paramount to enjoying your stay. I loved the carpet which had the names of tourist destinations and was again in earthy tones and suited the hotel and city perfectly.

Now where this hotel really excells is if you walk out the main entrance and head left, I believe you are in the nicest part of Berlin, with the dining options in the main areas, wide streets, beautiful earthy tones and funky shops in the immediate vicinity. You also are very close to Lafayette and the U barn is a very easy walk. The hotel was extremely well priced, with a decent bar that provided screens for our viewing of various world cup games. Breakfast options are available and are fairly priced. The staff were helpful, very well presented and professional in all dealings with them. Those with internet withdrawls would be pleased to note that there are four workstations near the main bar area and access is free for hotel patrons. That area is used for conventions and seminars so at times there could be some traffic, but I never experienced any issues with getting a computer.

I intend to stay at this hotel on my return to this wonderful city, and in fact I believe it was staying at this hotel and getting used to its location that enhanced my view in the first place. Very, very highly recommended.
