“Small money for great time in the city.”
Reviewed September 16, 2013

City Hostel is really good value for money. I've stayed there three times already and I'm definitely comming back. Hostel is perfectly located - in the center of prestigious neighbourhood, very close to many attractions (Branderburg Gate, Museum Island, Checkpoin Charlie and many more are easily available on foot). It's just few steps from Friedrichstraße which is full of luxurious stores and restaurants. Subway station is practically right next to the building. Rooms are clean. They're bit sparingly furnished, but it's absolutely enough for a hostel. I have nothing but the best memories of that place.

I am very very disappointed with my stay at City Hostel Berlin.

I had to stay in a room with 3 beds which are all mine and I wasted 24 Euros because of it.

I would not have to pay the additional charges if not for your rude and hostile staff on the 13th of September, Friday.

If the staff had confirmed my booking to be changed to Sunday, my friends could have cancelled their own bookings on Sunday and take those 2 extra beds on Sunday.

I will discourage my friends from coming to City Hostel Berlin should I not get a satisfactory reply and compensation.

I stayed with my friend and you will find a really good price for what you get.
Positives: breakfast included, good location (close to the most important tourist atractions of the city), good location (you have two underground stops close by) and good price for what you get in a hostel.
Negatives: wifi sign is very low and every 12 hours you need to go to the reception to get a new code, they will give you only one towel when you check in, no matter how many days are you going to stay and if you want an extra one, you need to pay 1€. As well, they never clean your room during the 4 days that I've been there.

It was basic. Clean, linen and towels included. No toiletries. Front desk staff rude, not helpful at all, always seemed bothered with questions. Check-in is super late, at 3 pm, but will hold your luggage. Breakfast was great with lots of variety. Location was excellent. Directions on website are outdated and wrong, so don't follow them. Would stay again.

Good location, good prices, unprofessional staff at the reception, only a couple of guys were ok,all the rest forget about it,especially the german guy who does also the bar at night, arrogant ,unpolite, always nervous when ask him informations and so on.He doesn't have the capacity to work as a front desk receptionist.also the manager she was so unpolite and not nice with most of the customer.

Room Tip: the walls of the rooms are very thin, that means you can ear any kind of noise around you

This hostel was what it says in the title a hostel. nothing fancy, nothing special, just nice. The sheets were clean and the hostel was tidy in generally. However the breakfast was below par but FREE :)

City Hostel is only "central" in the respect that it's central to one particular part of a very large city.

It *is* very well located for U-bahn travel in particular (close to both Stadtmitte and MohrenstraBe stations), yet ongoing engineering works at FranzosischestraBe mean that direct travel from between either station and the FriedrichstraBe area is impossible - although there appear to be replacement bus services in operation, it may just be easier to walk to these popular destinations. We regularly walked distances that *would* have spanned 3 or more U-bahn stops, in 10-15 minutes.

In the other direction, travel between MohrenstraBe (or Stadtmitte) and the Potsdamerplatz area and beyond still remains very quick and convenient. The hostel is also situated within walking distance of Checkpoint Charlie (5 minutes) and Brandenburger Tor (10-12 minutes).

At around 100-euros for 3 nights (during Easter weekend), City Hostel offered a very low price for an en-suite double room, with breakfast included. For this price, I was not expecting luxury by any means at all, and I'm always realistic about the correlation between price and quality.

However, the toilet (separate from the shower) in our room was really quite stinky. Despite my best efforts to clean the toilet and mask the smell, the toilet smelled very strongly of stale urine for the whole weekend. The toilet bowl was clean in appearance, yet must have gone a long time without a proper disinfect.

Breakfast was good, with a decent selection of breads/toast, cereals, cheeses, fruit, eggs, etc. - with plenty of places to sit, and plenty of food and drink to go around.

Reception service was extremely slow. Although staff were nothing short of pleasant and helpful, there were only two guys available to check in masses of Easter tourists - it took half an hour to check in and obtain a room key.

The foyer of the reception sells a decent range of chilled drinks (including alcoholic) at a reasonable enough price, as well as sandwiches, noodles, crisps, etc. - you can even buy a packed lunch to keep you going on your travels.

City Hostel would have received 4* for its reasonable location, low-price, and overall quality - if it hadn't been for the smelly toilet issue!
