“Like a luxury hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

Mittendrin : The name of this B&B means “in the middle” and it is in the middle of old West Berlin and in the Charlottenburg area just one block from KaDeWe, the “not to miss” department store. We thought this might be a small hotel, but it is a six room B&B that used to be two luxury apartments. The other units in this building all seem to be small businesses, such as a lawyer, etc. It is on the third floor. You had 10 steps up to the elevator and then 10 steps to Mittendrin. We stayed in the Modern Room and it was larger than any luxury hotel room and had 15 foot ceilings, double windows to block out noise, room darkening curtains, bay window overlooking street, and every amenity you might imagine. Bathroom across the hall was absolutely no problem. It was very luxurious and again had all the amenities you might want. Sabine, the owner, lives in the building next door. She is there to greet you, give you information, and a welcoming drink. A wonderful breakfast served in the dining room area is served each morning with beautiful china and is delicious besides. A refreshment area was set up with a well-stocked refrigerator, wine, liquors, snacks, etc that could be purchased, on the honor system, at a very small price. Loved the location. Only two blocks from the Metro and we could get to Opera, Berliner Philharmoniker, and major museum sights with a quick ride. Especially liked the restaurant called, Grenander, which was in a small plaza opposite the Metro. If you want to be pampered while enjoying Berlin, put Mittendrin at the top of your list.

We decided to spend a few days of fall half term in Berlin before heading for warmth in Majorca. Our stay was lovely. Berlin was a interesting and moving place to visit.

Our visit was made nicer and simpler by our stay at Mittendrin. Centrally located with simple access to railways and buses we were very happy that we chose to stay with Sabine in her excellent B&B. We were two adults and two children and felt very much at home throughout our stay.

Breakfast was delicious and fun as most guests opted to eat together with Sabine while planning their daily adventures. We discussed bus routes and sight seeing while comparing how we each had come to stay at Mittendrin.

While we were there we encountered honeymooners, business folks and retirees all staying with us. The accommodations felt like home and were thoughtfully arranged and presented. Sabine cared very much that each guest felt welcome and knew how to get around the accommodations and the city.

You will enjoy your stay and be very satisfied by its economy.
We will return should we choose to visit Berlin again in our travels.

Sabine and her B&B are both treasures in the center of Berlin. Sabine, the hostess and a veteran of the German stage, does everything to make her guests feel at home. She makes a point of greeting each guest poersonally on arrival, and she is a fountain of valuable information about Berlin restaurants, shopping, and sightseeing.

The B&B is in a Berlin apartment that has been tastefully renovated to provide several guest rooms. Most rooms have their own bathrooms, and everything is spotlessly clean. Excellent shopping and food boutiques are a block away in the KaDeWe, Berlin's famous department store -- a far cry from your average suburban mall. But apart from the amenities in the neighborhood, mittendrin is worth a visit because of the dedication Sabine shows to service and the comfort of her guests. These attitudes are increasingly rare in our time-starved, efficiency-infatuated world.

Room Tip: The two smaller rooms at the back of the B&B (Mediterraneo and Classico) are nice because they f...

Unfortunately my German is far from perfect so I must write my review in English. Entschuldigung! But what can I say, other than simply confirm all the great reviews others before me have written already! Our stay at Sabine's was my birthday present for my husband and Sabine did absolutely everything to make this weekend even more special. Cakes, flowers, chocolate truffles, champagne and even fireworks! And having one of the very best breakfasts we ever had in a hotel or b&b. Breakfast consisted of eggs, at least 5 different sorts of coldmeats, smoked salmon, cereals, lovely French and German cheeses, homemade jams (with whiskey!), a big bowl of fruit, yoghurts, the always fantastic German bread, juice, etc etc. But it's always the host that makes a place really stand out and I have to say that Sabine is as charming, welcoming and sweet as mentioned by other reviewers! We felt very much at home at Mittendrin. As mentioned by others also, the location is great: shopping district jusst around the corner and on walking distance to the Zoologischer Bahnhof where in 10mins the S-Bahn takes you to Hackischer Markt or Friedrichsgrasse from where you can enjoy Berlin's magnificence (past and present) on foot. I can very much recommend the Hidden Berlin and All Main Sites walking tour by Insider Tours. Incredibly knowledgable and enthousiastic tour guide. Tour takes at least 4 hours, so take care to wear good shoes. But it's really worth your time. Foodwise, we had an incredibly well-cooked Asian lunch at a Vietnamese/Chinese eatery around the corder of the Zoologischer Tiergarten. Just go there and you'll find out... Also, we ate very well at a traditional Austrian restaurant at Brechts on the waterfront on Friedrichstrasse. It used to be Bertold Brecht's favourite restaurant. Don't forget to have a Currywurst at Curry 36, right in front of the Zool. Bahnhof. It's the best.

We just spent two nights at this wonderful B&B in Berlin. Sabine, a former actress continues to perform as the innkeeper and hostess of Mittendrin. She puts everything into making guests feel comfortable and welcome. We had wonderful breakfasts, received thorough information about getting around the city, were assisted on what to see and where to eat. The central location is a real plus. Right around the corner is Ka Da We a department store without equal. Closeby are the bus and subway stops which make it easy to see wonderful Berlin. Our room was spacious and included a TV with CNN and BBC. During our stay all rooms were occupied so our breakfasts were pleasant and engaging with Sabine and the other guests.

Another bonus is the accessibility to and from the airport. Sabine got us a cab within minutes and the fare between the B&B and the airport was very reasonable and only about a 20 minute ride. This was another case of finding the perfect B&B on tripadvisor.

From the start of the booking process to the final departure Sabine Knoll goes out of her way to assist her guests. The accommodation is excellent with lots of thought has been given to those details that when absent are so frustrating; bathrooms have wide shelves and there are lots of lights in the rooms. The location near to the Zoo U and S Bahn stations and many bus routes is very convenient. Breakfast was a delight and Sabine excellent company and as well as a very reliable guide to Berlin's many attractions.

A B&B is all about a comfortable room and a nice breakfast. Mittendrin offers both in perfection. The rooms are nicely furnished and tastefully decorated. Enough has been written here about it, and all is correct. But the true class of a hotel / B&B shows in the tiny little details that you can't see on pictures. The owner, Sabine Knoll, constantly strives to get those right. Like the various adaptors supplied with the iPod / iPhone docking station.

Breakfasts are marvellous. You sit at a nicely laid out table with a great selection of food that rivals the buffet of a 5-star hotel. When you ask for something that is not available, you'll have it the next day for sure. You'll share the breakfast table with the other guests and the owner, who always succeeds to engage the guests in nice conversations.

The biggest asset of mittendrin is the owner. Sabine Knoll really goes the extra mile to make her guests feel comfortable, while being a great concierge and offering her advise on any kind of activity in and around Berlin.

Add to this the great location in a row of nicely renovated houses next to Kadewe and an easy access to public transportation, and you have a winning formula. If you like the intimacy of small hotels / B&B's and can do without the bells and whistles of a big hotel, mittendrin will be your perfect base for exploring Berlin.
