“No welcome feeling”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

The hotel is clean but dull and dismal, apart from breakfast time theres no one around.
Lots of stairs with no help.
It was very hot, when a request was made for a fan, we were told we do not have any.
Quite noisy on the street from nearby pub , which closes at 4am.
Not the best place.

Wife and I booked there through an online agency for two nights in early May, 2013 to start a "Romantic Road" trip; wife focused on moderate cost (for costly Wuerzburg) and the modest 9-euro parking rate, but this place was disappointing and not worth the money. While pretty close to trolley and bus lines, the Marktplatz, cathedral and Residenz palace, etc., it was on a rather depressed commercial street and itself gave a pretty depressing impression.

Dreary entry-way, no elevator, steep staircases and an ancient, small room on the 2nd (3rd) floor. No minibar, no AC, shabby beds and furniture and a 12" tube TV with only five local channels. The small bath, its tiles and fixtures were equally ancient from the early Beatles era (say, 1963) and unattractive; there was no working exhaust fan and water temp was iffy. The room required open-window ventilation, but that was tough because of a loud, Irish-style pub across the street whose open doors and noisy patrons kept us up at night. The cute restaurant shown in hotel photos is now dark all day since it has been closed down for years, probably since the former chef/owner died ages ago. There is only a different room offering cold breakfasts for E9 or so, but we wisely skipped that and preferred the little bakery-café a couple of doors away for some nice pastries and coffee at lower cost.

In summary, this is a place in which the heirs or surviving owner(s) have shown little interest and zero investment in for many years. So, why should we?

The Zur Stadt Mainz is conveniently located within walking distance to the town centre & the Wurzburg residence. The premises are clean & functional. We were two adults and a child and the room did appear a bit cramped for us. The owner gentleman received us nicely, showed us the room and gave us a few tips on the places to visit with a map. He did help us to carry one of our suitcases up 3 floors. This is one thing with most lodgings of this sort that they do not have a lift but it should not be a problem if you have light luggage.
Breakfast is decent value for money though you don't get anything hot except the tea/coffee. Also note that the restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner for large groups; though there are several restaurants close by, this was inconvenient for us we had to make another trip outside with the child. Not a problem though if your child is more grown up and manageable.

The place could do with more lighting and more genuine warmth from the hotel owner/ staff as is expected in the hospitality industry. A traveler carries home memories of the people he meets rather than all the buildings and fancy places to visit.

Room was very clean in a rustic, charming setting with the basics. Close to center of Wurzburg and easy walk to the Main river for drinks, dinner on the bridge with its view of the fortress across the river. Staff were cheerful and very friendly. Parking is available but close quarters to maneuver into. Again staff were helpful with parking.Breakfast was plentiful with meats, eggs, rolls ,juice, etc, Short walking distance to Residenz.

If you are interested in seeing the Residenz in Wurzburg, this historic property is in a great location within walking distance. The breakfast was also delicious although there were no hot entrees. The rooms were quite basic and in our room on the 3rd floor, the internet shut off at 10 PM and did not come back on for the rest of our stay. (one night) Our room fronted the street and the was a lot of noise from patrons of a nearby bar until 2 AM. There is no elevator.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the street. If you have trouble carrying bags up many stairs, request a first fl...

We chose this hotel partly due to its historic past and the fact that Frommers recommended it. We were not disappointed. Andrew made us feel especially welcome by taking our luggage and carrying it upstairs for us. After that he spent time recommending places for us to see while in Wurzburg. Our room was clean, nicely decorated and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was a true feast ,Franconian style. We just stuck to the basic bread, cheeses and coldcuts. Maybe another time we will be more adventurous at breakfast.

Beware! No fun if they put you in a room on the 3rd floor with no lift but 20kg of luggage!!
The breakfast was a bit weird. Not a traditional selection... fried cold chicken breast and lots of dried fish...
