We stayed at the Steinburg quite some time ago when our son was very young -- this time it was nice to be back with him, his wife, and their little boy. The Steinburg sits atop a high bluff overlooking the center of Wurzburg; views are wonderful, outdoor dining on the terrace is quite pleasant, and the kitchen is a very good one. Around the hotel in two directions, up- and downriver, are vineyards with easy walking paths and some interesting and informative signs outlining the history of wine in the region, the types of grapes grown, and so forth. We had a "Wine in the City" package with quite a few added attractions -- notably a boat trip, which we unfortunately did not stay long enough to take, and a self-guided vineyard tour and picnic lunch which we did do and thoroughly enjoyed. The picnic lunch comes in hampers and is very generous; in fact it was large enough that we realized carrying it with us would be a challenge, so we asked to have it on the terrace at the hotel, as a break in our vineyard walks, and it was *great*. (Among other things it includes a bottle of the local sparkling wine for each couple...).

Dinners were quite good -- the package came with a five-course special dinner, served at a nicely-decorated table, which we enjoyed a great deal. Afternoon tea on the terrace features a selection of amazing Bavarian pastries (all completely calorie-free and loaded with fiber, of course!) and a very relaxed atmosphere.

One of our rooms was on the smallish side, but the other was quite large, and both were clean, comfy, and freshly-decorated. The staff are super-friendly and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. In fact the only minor drawback of the hotel is that it is so cushy that it's easy to settle in for a long stay and not get down into Wurzburg. Other reviewers have pointed out that the Steinburg is not easy to find, and they've got a point -- you get there via narrow streets leading up the far side (from the town) of the bluff. But with a GPS it was easy to get there; when we stayed there twenty years ago, in pre-GPS days, we found it as well, so it can be done. And it's worth the effort.

Go, enjoy the comfort and the vineyards, work your way through the menus -- we'll come back ourselves, if we possibly can --

I stayed at the hotel for a conference for three nights. The conference facilities are fantastic - plenty of supplies and great rooms to work in.

My room was very comfortable, the soft drinks in the minibar are free and plug sockets are in the right places (beside the bed and near the dressing table).

I needed train times, which the receptionist got for me v.quickly and the early morning receptionist was very polite and helpful in the early hours when I left.

My only criticisms are slightly silly I suppose - unless I'm completely mistaken, I couldn't run the bath whilst there, which I'm sure does work otherwise why have it? Also, I would've liked to have at least one English language TV channel (e.g. Sky World or similar) and I thought the WiFi connection was expensive. I wasn't in my room often but when I'm away I do like to know what's happening in the world. Also, I would like a full length mirror in the room.

Overall, it was lovely - the views are fantastic, it is quiet at night and the service is fantastic.

The upside:
The hotel is beautiful and the sweeping views of the city and vineyards make staying here a must. It is a beautiful, authentic castle. The lunch is very good on the terrace and the breakfast was decent. Our room had a spectacularly huge terrace from which we could see both the city and the vineyard.

The downside:
No lifts. The rooms are very small but the bathroom was down right claustrophobic. The bed was small and the comforters were not very nice. The smells from the kitchen wafted into our room and there was no Air Conditioner so we couldn't leave the doors open and it got very warm in there - not optimal for sleeping, especially when you're used to a good A/C. The worst part is that they had a clock radio that I hadn't seen the likes of in 20 years. The radio would go off periodically but worse of all was when the alarm went off at 7am waking up our 2-year old daughter. The buttons didn't work and the cord was plugged in behind the headboard, ie: inaccessible.

Back to the upside:
The reception staff credited our bill with the breakfast tab to make up for the horrible morning. The service at the restaurant was pretty good too. The place is so beautiful that it's worth some of the inconveniences.

The Hotel is located on a hill with a great view over Wursburg. There are no lifts but staff happily carry all your luggage to your room and to the reception when leaving. Internet is available but apparently very expensive. Sauna is available and I think men and women bathe together. The minibar in the room is complimentary, and it has soft drinks, juices and snacks. For alcohol and other treats there is a menu and it can be ordered to the room. The room was decorated nicely to create a castle feeling, and the bathroom was modern.

The restaurant downstairs is beautiful and the food quite good. We booked a specific table for dinner upon arrival, but when going for dinner it had been given away. The staff explained that they cannot ensure a specific table, however, other people had been able to reserve specific tables with views. We were not sure if it was a mix-up or done on purpose, but being truthful would've been appreciated. The kitchen gave us an extra free starter as an apology and the waitress booked us a the table with the best view for breakfast (as a surprise). This made us happy, but still we wonder why couldn't we be given honesty.

Another negative thing was that check-in time was from 15. We arrived at 15.45 and they hadn't even gotten to our room yet (cleaning). In the end we got in the room after 16 and basically the cleaner had to be kicked out.

Apart from these two negatives the experience was wonderful and we would definitely go again. They sell adorable teddy bears, notebooks, jewellery, wedding decorations and other objects in the hotel, which adds to the spirit.

We stayed at the Steinberg for our wedding night. My husband contacted the hotel in advance and let them know the purpose of the visit, and the service we received went far beyond our expectations. They left champaigne, sweets, and little bride and groom teddy bears in the room for us. They also brought breakfast to our room in the morning.

The room was nice and definitely had a historic feel. We got in very late and left early, so we didn't have much time to explore the property. A word of caution for disabled travelers is that there are a lot of stairs and narrow hallways, so this may not be the best choice for the mobility-impaired.

It should also be noted that this property sits high on a hill, and provides a fantastic view of Wurzburg.
