“Fun time at the Roter Hahn”
Reviewed August 3, 2012

We enjoyed our stay at the Roter Hahn. The hotel itself was pretty dated (pretty typical of a medieval town :-)) but was also very clean. We ended up having to get 2 rooms for the 5 of us, which was fine. They were pretty close to each other. The staff were very friendly. We had a nice dinner in the restaurant but just grabbed breakfast from one of the many bakery shops nearby. The location was great! It was right in the center of the town. We parked outside the city walls and had a short walk in. Driving inside the walls looked crazy!

I was in town for the Master Draught Festival. I love this town and the festival was quite an experience. Roter Hahn is absolutely in the best location possible and at a reasonable price too. They have nearby parking, which is a tough thing to come by. Everyone there is pleasant. The room is clean. It is a reasonable size and includes free WiFi. Their outdoor cafe/restaurant is fantastic and goes right out on to the main thoroughfare. The building itself is quintessential Rothenburg. I really wish I could give it a better review, but . . . My room had the smallest bathroom I've ever experienced in a hotel. It was literally like an RV bathroom with very little water pressure in the shower. The sink was outside the bathroom in the main living space while the toilet and shower were inside what I can only describe as a closet. I got one of the few rooms left due to the festival so perhaps I got one of their less desirable rooms. I have no idea if other rooms are like this, but honestly it was it's only drawback. The place is so great otherwise.

Room Tip: My advice is to check on the bathroom situation and if it all checks out (or you don't mind a wi...

good: location, location, and location. also free internet.

bad: old and worn out room and facilities. noisy from your neighbor can be heard loud and clear. room is hot and humid. the bathroom is tiny!!

the hotel quality is absultely 2 star, but the location is good in return.

staffs were very kind and nice.

If you don't mind an old facility and room, this hotel is a good choice.

My stay in this hotel was very enjoyable. It is within walking distance of all attractions in the Old Town. Breakfast was superb. I can recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: Make sure you read the specifications of the room you want on the hotel's website

This was the first visit to Germany for our oldest son, wife and granddaughter, perhaps the 20th for us. The overall trip was outstanding in itself, with visits to Munich, Salzburg and many friendly cousins in the Allgau. But it was one night in the Roter Hahn and Rothenburg that impressed them most. They walked the entire city, much of it on the wall, taking hundreds of photos exclaiming over each new view. By nightfall they were tired--the Roter Hahn welcomed us to lovely and clean rooms, a quiet sleep, and a wonderful breakfast. Tom asked us laterif we could plan another trip just to Rothenburg.

However, if you are looking for the Ritz experience this is not your hotel. The decor is dated but that just adds to the charm of the hotel. The manager is extremely nice and accommodating, as are all the people that work there. The hotel is located right in the heart of town and close to absolutely everything and has a very reasonable price. We were only going to stay one night and extended our trip another two, till we left Germany all together. I would hands down come back to the Roter Hahn and would recommend it to anyone, looking for charm and affordability in the most beautiful town in Germany. Not sure if it is worth getting the continental breakfast included in your room, as there are many kaffee places in town. The Night Watchman tour is a must as well, very worth your time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are fairly similar and there is an elevator so that is perfect! You can get good deals...

Stayed two nights earlier this month (July 2011) with husband and 14 yo son. The hotel was able to provide a triple room, and the beds were comfy for all 3 of us. Furniture, wall coverings, curtains, and bathroom had a 1980's mobile home style...even the tiny tv was from that time frame. But who goes to Rothenburg to sit in a hotel and watch tv? The place was clean, offered free wifi (hard to find in Germany), and had a great location! I found it quaint, but certainly not modern or fancy.
Skip the 8.50 per person Euro breakfast of basically rolls and cheese....there are several good bakeries within the city walls (easy to reach).
If you get a good rate, this is not a bad choice. Walking around town, many of the hotels looked similar to this one (on the outside at least).
