It was a cute place to take a few photos, but nothing very spectacular. The surrounding gardens were very nice. You have to ring the bell to get someone to let you into the garden, but we were unable to get into the 'castle' itself. If you can figure that part out, perhaps it will be worth the trip! Walking down in that valley was lovely, though, so if you are looking for some exercise, head down there and explore.

Or one can make an appointment. The owner has to guide, as his wife is suffering from a bad knee. One has to 'kling' the bell, and the owner will come. Fluently he talked about the history of this small 'castle'. It is small and narrow, but rather high. Be carefull at the steps, as it is rather steep. It is set in the beautifull location of the Tauber valley. Must be even more great in winter. We did like the tour and would recommend this to all.

Toppler Castle is part of the beautiful Tauber Valley walk that continues on to the little village of Detwang. It is easiest accessed via Burg Tor which has a lovely medieval garden jutting on a promotory with a lookout over the valley and down to the castle. Keep an eye out for the face mask carved into the tower wall.
The walk down to the valley is reasonably steep but it is a good paved path. At the bottom you pass through a lovely green meadow and then cross the Tauber River via a charming wooden covered bridge. There were nice views back up to the walled town.
The castle itself is quite small and is painted a pale blue. One of the locals surmised that this colouring in medieval times depicted great wealth. The castle is now on private grounds and it was closed when we were there but we could just make it out over the private fence.
The Tauber River itself offered its own surprises. It is meant to be trout filled and there relaxing in the shallows was a large trout. That was hard to find.
The overall walk and setting made for a pleasant hour or so.
