Owner description: The museum exhibits in 2 buildings and on 6 floors Germany`s most important collection of legal history. The highlight of this museum is its exploration into the unusual law enforcement techniques used by local rulers in medieval and early modern times, such as torture instruments, shame punishments or instruments to execute corporal punishments or death penalties. Numerous displays, original graphics by famous masters as Dürer, Grien and Rembrandt as well as original documents, seals and law books from the 13th - 19 th centuries show the development of law in past centuries. The homes and walls of Rothenburg show visitors the mileau of times gone by without telling much about the lawful circumstances of its residents. Arising questions? This was a good look at medieval crime and punishment techniques in the middle ages. Exhibits included an iron maiden, drunk tank, shaming masks, interesting way to spend a few hours.

Decent size museum. They had a lot of itneresting items there, but a little more explanation on what they were for some, would have been nice. Tons of old documents and seals. If you're in Rothenburg o.d.T., I recommend a short visit here.

It was really interesting...all six of us loved it! Our favorite parts were the shame masks and the tickling punishment.

Really interesting to read the history and 'progression' of punishment in civil society. Perhaps could do with fewer 'shaming masks'.

Worth checking out. A lot of very interesting punishment / shame tools. Most exhibits were in English.
