“Great town great hotel”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is certainly touristy, but it also has a wonderful atmosphere, It reminded me of something out of Terry Pratchett's novels. At the Hotel Eisenhut everything seems professional: the staff worked hard to make our stay a pleasant one. The restaurant served tasty authentic food, and in a dining room overlooked by an enormous painting recording the main event in the town's history, the 'Meistertrunk'. Our stay in Rothenburg was a memorable one, in a good way.

We have been fortunate in our travels and have never written a negative review for a hotel before so to give an accurate account it is a long one. We were on a touring holiday and had stayed at several delightful hotels. We arrived in the early evening and were very impressed with Rothenburg. We checked in and were told we were not in the hotel but across the road in an annexe. We entered a dim ancient building which did smell a little odd. We went to our room and were completely horrified at the musty smell and the general state of the room. It is an historic building but the carpet had at one time been cream and now is covered in stains. A green cushion was on a bench and when my husband put a bag onto it there was dust floating everywhere. The bed was fine and the bedding very clean. However, there was no way that we would be spending the night in this room. It was distinctly unpleasant. I crossed the road to speak to the very pleasant lady on the reception. I offered to pay extra to upgrade to another room but she said she was sorry none were available. I rang our son in the UK and asked him to help find us another room anywhere in the area and, failing that, we would sleep in the car. My husband went to ask for internet access so we might find ourselves a room. At this news the receptionist phoned her manager and a room was immediately found for us within the hotel which was clean and pleasant. It was an unpleasing start to out stay in Rothenburg an otherwise delightful town.

Dear Diane65,

thank you so much for writing this review.
I apologize that you were not satisfied with your room. Please let me explain, each room is unique and different in style and furniture. So it is sometimes difficult to find the right taste in the booked category. We are happy to read, that you felt more comfortable with the upgrade in another room.
Please be assured, that we have noticed the negatives notes and will do our best to improve ourselves. Thank you!

Best wishes from all members of staff

The Eisenhut hotel is a very nice place to stay in Rothenburg ODT area. It is perfectly located on what looks like the main street, not far from the central plaza of the town. It is a very traditional place with some original furnishing. My room was located on the second floor facing a side street wich was a bit noicy in the mornings. Also there is no Air Conditioned but I believe that is standard on Germany (the place is so cold they usally dont need it). In my case, the room felt a bit warm at night, so I left the windows opened and the cold of the night entered and felt better than AC. Friendly staff and good breakfast. Visit the restaurant (check for a separte review). Overall, very nice.

Room Tip: ASk for main building and facing the front of the building.

Dear Jomo1383,

thanks for your great review. Great that you had a nice stay with us.
Indeed, we have no AC, cause our hotel is a listed building (4 patrician buildings).
But we are offering our guests fans for the warmer days.

We look forward to welcoming you in our hotel again.

Best wishes from the Eisenhut-Team

Traditional and authentic! This was steps from The Watchman's Tour, the city wall, and many very good restaurants. The room had a beautiful view of the countryside, and comfortable bed & bath, great water pressure in shower. The hotel restaurant has a beautiful terrace. We were delighted to find this wonderful spot, and the parking was perfect as you drove to the front of the hotel and they handled the car for a nonimal fee.

Charming old hotel in the heart of the old city of Rothenburg. If you enjoy medieval surroundings, this is the place for you. Charming rooms, friendly and service-minded staff, great breakfast buffet, free internet, great view both in the direction of the City center and from the terrasse.
Parking in separate stalls.
If you do not want to wade in tourists - do not select the tourist season. If you don't mind - it is a beautiful place in the summer light.

Room Tip: We had a room with a view to the city square. It was nice and quiet.

At first we were a bit disappointed that the old section was completely booked and we would have to stay in the part across the street, but the room was virtually the size of a suite, so that was a nice surprise. Breakfast was only so-so. The location was very good but pretty much anywhere is close to everything as the town is so small.

Stayed just one night in Hotel Eisenhut in late June. The hotel feels like it was built ages ago, with creaky stairs, antiques, and knight's armor everywhere. It really has a lovely feel to it. We paid a little extra for the "historic city view" and were very glad we did. The views are amazing! The rooms were very large, with nice bathrooms, but everything seemed a bit worn (the rooms seemed to have been last renovated in the 60's or 70's--the decor was nice, but showing lots of wear and tear). We were there during a heat wave, and it was very hot in the hotel (no air conditioning anywhere), but they put good fans in the rooms and it cooled off enough at night that we could sleep. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and it was excellent. The town of Rothenburg is beautiful and definitely worth a short visit. One night felt like enough though as it is very small.
