Owner description: The city hall of this picturesque, undeveloped village reflects its anachronistic spirit.

The clocktower had a great view of the square. There was a good system in place so it was not overcrowded as climbing the small stairs does not allow for easy passing.

Thank meandros

The town hall was undergoing renovation while we were there, so we couldn't enjoy the building itself, but we did climb the tower to view the city from above. The tower is approximately 200 steps and these are narrow, steep, winding steps. The last bit is little more than a ladder! However, the climb was well worth the view. You can get a good view of the town as well as the country side, the two story bridge, the wall, everything. They don't rush you while you are up there, but there is no room to pass by other visitors so you need to keep moving if there are other visitors. The climb down was more exhilarating than the ascent--I ended up descending backwards (like down a ladder) because the stairs were so steep. But this all just added to the experience!

The climb was very exciting, especially the last few steps, which decrease in size and depth as you climb. Getting down is equally fraught, but exciting too. I had to climb down as you would a ladder on a ship, backwards, but the thrill of having done it and the spectacular views were well worth it. I'm smiling as I write this :-). Do it!

Scaffolding generally looks ugly. Not so here on the Rathaus in Rothenburg. The contractor has covered the scaffolding with a beautiful screen print of the Townhall that includes the tower. We weren't able to brave that historic climb this time.
Hint: the little cafe directly opposite across the square has good express, tasty marzipan & kisch nibbles and a great view of the Rathaus.

On the main square, and also the spot from which walking tours depart. Check with tourist information office for days & times of guided walking tours.
