The castle dates back to the mid twelfth century and is well preserved. I visited the castle on a cold, misty September morning and the effect was breathtaking - like going back several centuries.

To enter the castle, you have to pass through several narrow gates including one defended by a portcullis. Inside, the central courtyard is surrounded by several buildings including a church, great hall and defensive walls. A covered well in the center of the courtyard probably provided water for the residents. The old buildings are rather drab with the bright red window shutters and contrasting yellow crosses providing the only splash of color. A lot of the courtyard is now covered by a manicured garden.

You can only visit the interior of the castle with a guided tour which takes you on the wall walk - a narrow wooden path along the walls which was used by the defenders. Along the way you see defensive structures, weapons and holes for firing at the enemy or dropping offensive stuff at anybody trying to climb the walls. The tour also includes the prison and the great hall which is still used for ceremonies.

This is a great place to visit if you are interested in medieval history.

The castle is beautifully preserved and the tour was so interesting. My daughter particularly enjoyed learning of medieval times and the torture of prisoners! Definitely worth the few extra dollars to see inside.

I've visited lots of castles and palaces in my travels, but this one stands out from the pack by a wide margin. It hasn't been overly restored to make it look glitzy, and has been an royal residence in recent past by the Prince of Wallerstein. This is a great place for those looking for an in depth overview of medieval life.

Absolutely gorgeous, and the tour is fantastic. I'm not sure why another reviewer said they could not take photos; there was only one room of the castle where photos were not allowed. Very worthwhile!

3 Euros to visit the grounds (no interior photos) & another 4 Euros for the hourly guided tour - not really worth it. Take pics from below & call it good!
