My husband and I were driving around Bavaria for a European vacation, stopping at towns without any reservations. We were able to do this in early May as it is not a busy season. Therefore we had no trouble finding reasonable accommodations no matter where we went.
What you have to understand about Hotel L.A. is that it is actually THREE different locations, some hostel-style rooms, with shared bathrooms, and some private apartments. So, your stay depended on what you were looking for, and if you got what you were looking for. Those who complain about the stay probably had a shared bathroom when they would have preferred a private one, etc.
We arrived in Fussen about 11:00 am, and just drove around looking for a pension/hotel within our budget. Hotel L.A. was the first place we checked out. We arrived at the "main" one, where there is a phone outside the door, with very clear instructions, in several different languages, that if you are looking for a room or are checking in, please call this number, with the phone provided. I thought that was very handy!
So we called, and the owner/manager answered right away, and told us he would be on his way. Well, I thought this was very good customer service, being as we just showed up looking for a room. It was all handled very well. He arrived within 10 minutes, and right away explained to us that he actually has two other buildings, and what kind of room we were interested in, etc. I think it was only $40E more for a room with our own bathroom. IT IS WORTH IT. If you can get a room with a private bathroom, do yourself a favor and get it. From what I read of other reviews, the bathrooms can get crowded. It is WORTH IT, for the extra $40E or so more. I mean, how often are you visiting Fussen to see Neuschwanstein Castle?? Just make your stay happy and comfortable.
We stayed in the building on Von-Freyburg, in the topmost loft with the slanted ceiling, the one that is pictured on the booking.com website. It was overall a clean room, the beds were questionable upon first looking at them, but turned out ok. A very SPACIOUS bathroom. Like, our the bathroom was HUGE, lol. Within walking distance (maybe a little far for some, but we were ok to walk) to the center of town. A lot to walk around and see in Fussen. Don't bother with the breakfast, there's plenty of places in town to get some coffee and fresh bakery items.
Overall, I think the quality of your stay can depend on the room you stay in, and the time of year. We had one of the lovely apartments, full kitchen, fridge, etc. It was in May, so we didn't need A/C or heating. Like I said, it's worth it to just pay the $40E extra or so, and get the room we did, you will be happy with it.
*Owner, Lahdo (I think that's his name) was VERY nice, friendly, charming, and very accessible for us, with the use of his nifty phones he placed at each building with his phone number. He preferred us to pay in cash.
**FREE wifi, worked well for us, but again it's probably because we went in May when it was less crowded, I imagine the speed of the wifi gets bogged down when there's more people there using it.
OVERALL, I WOULD RECOMMEND IT, BUT ONLY IN THE ROOM WE STAYED IN, IN MAY, BECAUSE OF THE OTHER REVIEWERS.
