Altstadthotel Zum Hechten

The hotel is in the centre of Fussen, within walking distance of the tourist attractions and the good restautants (except of the Neuschwanstein Castle, that you have to go by car). Breakfast is just ok.

We only stayed one night in Hotel Zum Hechten, but we had a lovely time. It's a family run hotel right in the middle of Old Town Fussen, with parking on site at the back, free wifi, and a very good buffet breakfast included. The breakfast room (upstairs) has been decorated in a pastiche of King Ludwig's fantasies from the nearby Castle Neuschwanstein, which is good fun. The room we had was surprisingly large, very airy and well maintained and had a balcony. We would highly recommend the hotel.

The restaurant is part of the hotel and had an extensive menu of local specialities - big portions and reasonable prices, and very friendly service.

We bought a combined ticket for the two castles from the Hotel Reception which means that you can stand in the reserved ticket line when you get to the castle ticket office (about 4 kms out of town). If you do both castles and get to the ticket office at 8am (in time for the first English tour of the first castle at about 8.50) you will be finished with both castles by about midday. The second castle (Neuschwanstein) is about a 30 minute walk up the hill from the first, and you need to allow time to do a short detour to the bridge from where you get the best views of Neuschwanstein.

Room Tip: A room at the back (which we had) would be quieter than a room overlooking the main street.

I only stayed one night at this hotel but I really enjoyed my stay. I stayed in a twin room which was a good size with cupboards and shelves and a good sized bathroom. The staff were very welcoming and carried my bags to my room (I don't think the hotel has a lift) and also were very helpful in telling me how to get to the castles as I didn't have much time. The rooms were immaculate and beds were comfortable. The hotel was easy to find only 5-10 minutes walk from the train station. The buffet breakfast was very nice with a range of yoghurts, cereals, bread, cold meats and cheese. Overall a very nice hotel and I enjoyed my stay. I would recommend if you're looking for a nice hotel in Fussen.

We stayed at this hotel in September of 2011, on a Rick Steves recommendation and were not disappointed. The room was large with a sitting area and a balcony which made the room look even larger. The bathroom was large by european standards. Very confortable stay, very clean also. The buffet breakfast was great, large variety of delicious breads, cold cuts, eggs, cheeses, pastries, etc. The breakfast room was lovely. The staff was very polite and friendly. Would stay again.

I picked my hotels based on reviews and our budget. Of all the hotels i picked for my family trip to Germany, this was the most disappointing one. Both our rooms were located on the ground floor at the back building. The moment i stepped into the room i felt so upset as the room was nothing like on their website and nothing like the rooms that earned those positive reviews. There was no TV in our room even though in their booking confirmation cable tv was included. Oh, maybe they expected us to watch tv out in the family area outside the room which was a public area. The room was not well maintained and is in dire need of a refurbishment. Our window opened out to the street so we had to keep the curtains closed all the time. Sometime in the evening some smell of food wafted into our room and it was awful. The noise from the street woke me up several times in the night. The other room was also poorly located, felt like being in a basement room next to the parking lot.

The rates we paid were not cheap. We paid less for better hotels on this trip. I made my reservations 6 months ahead and ended up getting such horrible rooms. Its like they overbooked and pushed the one nighters down to the rooms in the basement.

Fussen is a beautiful little town and the entire area is riddled with bike paths. Consider renting bikes at the train station to visit the castles, the nearby town of Schwangau and the Forggensee. Our triple at this hotel was absolutely huge. Everything was updated and comfortable. The owner was extremely friendly and proud of his hotel. The room, although clean and comfortable, lacked charm and character. The location is great - just off the main pedestrian drag of the town. We would definitely stay here again. The one negative was a member of the staff. She was our waitress at the restaurant and then at the front desk when we had a question during the evening. I don't believe that we offended her in any way, but she was downright rude to us. We left scratching our heads in confusion about what we had done.

Traveling with friend, excellent hotel. The owners were delightful. Breakfast was a full spread of everything you could want. The rooms were very clean and a cute twin bed accomodation. The bathroom ( in suite) was roomy and had all the necessities and the heated towel rack. Our view wasn't the greatest but you only sleep there. It had a balcony to sit on but we were there in March and a little cool. Close to everything in walking distance except the castles. You can get a voucher for your tickets to the castle at the hotel (a little discount) They also have a restaurant in the hotel but we choose to venture in town. Very quaint little town with much to see and shop. Information center in center of town. The alps and views are spectacular!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view if that is important to you.
