Prior to this visit we had not heard of Augsburg as a "must see" european church but after spending over an hour exploring its chapels and altar pieces we will definitely be telling others "its worth a look" From the fine old doors with their lion head centerpieces to the very modern altar and Christ figure of the newest chapel we were entralled by this Dom

Augsburg is a beautiful place which still embodies the life and architecture of the middle-ages when it was one of the most powerful kingdoms in Germany. This Cathedral is worth the visit since it is peaceful and not crowded and the architecture is exquisite.

This place has history, we first walked around the Dom and took in the digs and the early history. Then visited the beautifull Dom en ended our tour in the small museum ( small fee). The showpiece is one of the original 1000 year old bronze doors. What a superb quality. They have also some exquisite textiles on display. All in all well worth the visit.

Cathedral is a lovely place. Don't miss the cloister or seeing the Romanesque bronze doors (for a separate fee.) It would be very nice if there was better documentation either online or printed about the iconography of the doors in English. Outside the building you can see some Roman artifacts and some boards with explanations of where digs have been carried out. Also the foundation of a much older church. Boards are in German only.
