The Dom is an Augsburg landmark. It though is distinctly German and therefore very different to the churches you will find in other areas of the world. Well worth the time to drop in. Entry is free.

It was fairly early on a weekday morning, it was snowing outside, so we decided to have a look in the cathedral. We had the place to ourselves, apart from a lady cleaning & a homeless guy sleeping in one of the small side chapels.

The cathedral dates from the 10th C (remains of an earlier basilica are just outside), but has been remodelled and extended several times.

There are several parts we found particularly interesting - the Romanesque crypt from the original period under the West choir, the bishops' gallery with paintings of the bishops from over 500 years, the Chapel of our Lady in Baroque style and the cloister with interesting tombstones in the floor & walls. There was also a really nice Nativity scene at the time we were there.

Beautiful cathedral mostly from the inside. There is also a nice museum there. Free entrance to the cathedral itself and 4 € to the museum.

The previous reviewer said that photos were banned but I think that is only during services. Better outside than in.
