“A presidential stay in Regensburg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013 via mobile

We spent one night at the Sorat Insel Regensburg on our way to the Frankfurt airport and could not have been happier. The hotel is located in a former factory on an island in the Danube opposite the UNESCO town of Regensburg, maybe one hundred meters upstream of the twelfth century stone bridge. This location has a great view of the river and the town and is very quiet. It is a short walk into town for dinner or lunch at the Wurstkuchl or to the Dom.

For some reason we did not understand but were happy about, we were upgraded to the presidential suite, which was very large and had windows on two sides, facing the town and downstream to the stone bridge. This was a real treat. The hotel has all the expected amenities (except the wifi is weak), a decent breakfast, and underground parking. We would definitely stay at the Sorat Insel should we return to Regensburg.

Recently stayed at the Sorat during one of the warmest times staff are polite and helpful. The hotel is situated on the Danube and positioned well for the old town of Regensburg.

This is a an excellent town with amazing architecture and the shops are varied and it is great to see it is not been commercialised.Plenty of good restaurants and a varied beer list.

We stayed here for two nights in the middle of a major heatwave (up to 35 degrees in the daytime) and the first thing to say is that there is no air conditioning because it's a 'heritage building' and subject to building controls. The hotel management and staff told us that they are well aware of this and regret it. It meant that we had to sleep with the windows and curtains open - and such is the layout of the hotel that most other rooms seemed able to see straight into ours... And so did the people living in the flats beside us.

Secondly, it is almost impossible to find unless you've been before. A map sent with the booking confirmation would have been helpful.

Thirdly, we weren't overwhelmed by our reception; getting into the garage beneath the hotel should have been straightforward, but it wasn't and the young woman at reception wasn't too interested in explaining things to my partner who speaks no German; we were a bit travel stained and weary after a long, hot drive but our greeting was perfunctory and condescending compared to that offered to rather more nicely dressed, less demanding German-speaking couples.

Then we tried to get a drink, but the barman was off somewhere else and we had wait until he was found.

Those are the negatives. The location couldn't be better and the view of the Danube from the public rooms' windows is superb. The bedroom was big; the shower just about worked; the lifts took about 3 - 4 mins on average to arrive and take us up/down two floors (we had heavy luggage!). The restaurant was excellent the first night with interesting menu, prime service and friendliness. The second night was on a weekend and every restaurant in town was booked, so we ate in again. An Italian night - 2 hard worked chefs prepared a wide range of different accompaniments to pasta according to the instructions you gave them; there was wine in a barrel and a long buffet which was very good.

So that's why you get 3 stars but not more.

We stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed our room with views of the Danube and old town. Very convenient location. Room spacious, but fairly basic. Comfortable beds and good sized bath. What was most outstanding was the friendly and helpful service from the Reception staff - they welcomed us warmly and kept up the excellent service throughout our stay.

This hotel has to be in one of the best locations, on an island in the River Danube, two minutes walk from the medieval bridge that takes you into the Alt Stadt of Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The hotel itself is good and the staff friendly. Great place to stay

This hotel is on the bank of the Danube River opposite the oldest part of Regensburg. A stone bridge built between 1135 and 1146 crosses the Danube at this point and is within an easy three or four minute walk from the hotel. Once across the bridge, you can walk through the large medieval center of the city -- a UNESCO World Heritage site. From our hotel window, we had a memorable view of the bridge, the old part of the city, and of the 17th century cathedral that dominates the old city's skyline. The view of the river, bridge, and city from our hotel window is one of the most memorable from our extensive trip to Germany. The hotel is modern, very clean and professionally run.

Room Tip: river view
