We timed our visit to Germany and Austria to visit as many Christmas markets as possible. We went to multiple markets in Munich, Salzburg, Wolfgangsee area, and Regensburg. The "Romantic' market at the Thurn und Taxis palace was my favorite. Unlike the others we visited, there is an entrance fee (6euros), but it was worth it. Why? The booths that sell decorations and handcrafts offer a better quality and selection than other markets-perhaps there is a more stringent selection process. Food booths were more varied , and quality was very good. It was large, spread out in two palace courtyards and winding paths in the park outside the palace. Best of all was the atmosphere. We went in the evening, and throughout the market, bonfires and torches light your way along paths, along with Christmas lights. Stop and admire the towering tree slathered with decorations and lights in the center courtyard. Enjoy a warm cup of flaming rum and sugar- spiked gluhwein served from a kettle hanging over an open fire (feuerzangenbowle). Enjoy the appearance on the balcony at 6 of the lovely Christkind, who reads a poem to the crowds below. It was a wonderful experience; highly recommend this market.
While we were there, my family also took in the one hour tour of the palace (German tour). They loved it.
