We bought a ticket to go up the tower - well worth it for the views. The tower also shows some amazing photo's of the destruction of the City during World War II

For those who know typical topography of old towns in Europe will not be surprised that Nurnberg kaiser's castle is situated on a hill at the edge of the old town street. Although it does not look different that many of defence castles, it is worth visit due to its well concervated brick walls, nicely planned decoration of local emblems and flags and pleasant panoramic view over the old town of Nurnberg. It also offers some place to rest in shade, so if you feel fit enough to take a walk up the street simply do it. By doing so you will

Nuremberg means sandstone hill - and that's where the castle is. Good views over the own but nothing to see in the castle itself

High up a very steep slope....we walked and got out of breath as it was steep and cobble stones. However, whilst it was interesting to get to the top, the views of the surrounding area were not very impressive. The walls were too high to get a good view and roof tops are not what we really wanted to see.
However, we enjoyed the climb.....

The castle is nestled on a hilltop on the farthest point north of the center of town. The roads/streets leading you to it are quite narrow and there is a bit of construction (repaving) going on, bu be sure to go.

Once up top, you get an incredible view of the entire city! It is fabulous and helps you determine the visual pesrpective of the town from a birds eye view. The castle facilities are also worthwhile...there are some gardens, which are peaceful, well maintained and a real treat for vistors and locals alike. We wandered through and took several pictures while exploring.

Lastly on the way to the ticket office for the inteior of the castle, don"t miss the Bavarian style door that welcomes you in. It is painted and a huge door, that gives the catle, its size and fortification some perspective.Very cool.
